Shelter Me(56)

“No, I am not. This is what I am trying to tell you. We have a six year old daughter. What is she going to say when she wakes up and finds us in bed together?”

“Baby, we will work it out.”

“Fine, Luke. We will move in here, but until Lucy adjusts more to all of this, you and I are roommates.”

“Uh, fuck no! That’s not going to happen. I told you I want, no I need you in my bed.”

“I am not backing down on this, Luke.”

“I am not either!” he shouts.

“If you don’t quite acting like a baby, I will just stay at my aunt’s house and not move in here.”

“That’s blackmail as well as bullshit, Shayne, and you know it. But fine. I will agree with it for now, but this isn’t over.”

I walk towards him and place my hands on his chest. Moving them up so I can wrap them around his neck, I lean in to give him a soft kiss on the lips.

“I know it’s not over, caveman.”

Waking up to the feel of sweat everywhere, I look over and see that I am practically lying on top of Luke. I stay there for a few moments, running my fingers over the smoothness of his defined chest. I love waking up in his arms. He makes me feel so safe. Carefully lifting my head so I don’t wake him, I stare at the perfect outline of his face, his rugged good looks, and the day old heavy scruff on his face. He’s mine again and I feel so damn lucky. Rolling over to get out of bed I try not to wake him, but I do. He pulls me back into him.

“Morning, baby,” he says drowsily.

“Morning.”

“I need to get up and take a shower and get myself ready. What time did you tell your parents we would stop by when you called them last night?”

“Ten thirty. Mom is going to make a brunch.”

Looking at the clock I figure I have a few hours to get myself ready, so I push myself up off the bed and walk into the bathroom, calling out to Luke to get his ass up and make me some coffee.

Showering and letting my hair dry naturally, I leave it down with loose waves flowing freely down my back. I pull out a long black maxi dress that I absolutely love as it fits my figure like a glove and shows off my curves. It’s light and simple. I grab a pair of black flip flops and head downstairs where Luke is waiting in the kitchen for us to go get Lucy.

After locking up his house, we set out to the garage. Luke helps me into the Range Rover and walks around to take his seat at the wheel. It is about a fifteen minute drive to Adam’s house and within minutes of arriving there, Luke’s phone rings, bringing us both out of our happy, dazed state. He picks it up to look at the caller ID.

“Shit,” he mumbles before answering the call.

“What the fuck do you want?”

Taken back by the harsh tone he takes with whoever is calling, I turn my head to look out the window, not being able to help wondering who it is.

“I am not meeting with anyone today. I have plans with my family, so tell them tomorrow morning at nine a.m. in my office. Yes, I will make sure my brother is there.”

Without saying goodbye, he presses ‘end’ and sets his phone back down on the console. I know he won’t tell me anything, so I just sit there thinking to myself how I don’t like to see him so upset over this case. But why do I still have this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that there is more to these strange phone calls than what he is telling me?

The minute we pull into Adam’s drive, Lucy bolts out the front door and Luke’s mood changes the minute he sees her face. He barely has time to put it in park before she is at my side of the car. Opening the car door, she jumps in and climbs on my lap.

“Hi, Mommy, hi, Daddy!”

“Hi, Lucy,” we say in unison.

“Did you have fun?” Luke asks with genuine interest.

“Yes, I did, and Muppet slept with me, too.”

“Oh he did, huh?”

Lucy nods her head.

Lifting Lucy off of my lap and placing her on the ground, I get myself out of the car and take her by her little hand and start walking towards the house.

“Let’s go inside and get all of your stuff so we can get going and not be late, okay?”

“Okay,” she says. Lucy and I pause as we wait for Luke to get out of the car and we all walk inside. Adam is standing in the front breezeway holding her bag. He leans forward to place a kiss on my cheek.

“Morning, you two. She is pretty excited about today. It’s all she talked about after hanging up last night.”

“Good to hear, man.”

“My parents are so excited to meet her, too. I think my mom has called me at least fifty times in the past few days. Oh, that reminds me, man. Mom said for you to come on over, too. You know she is making her famous blueberry pancakes.”
