Misfit(267)

Ignoring Kendall, Meggie met Bunny’s gaze in the rearview mirror. “What do you want to do?”

“You’re my matron-of-honor, so whatever you have planned is fine with me.”

Meggie drove them to a pretty two-story house surrounded by flowers and an emerald green lawn. A fountain stood in the circular driveway.

“The house belongs to a client of Zoann and me,” Meggie explained, pulling out a key and opening the door. “He’s rented the house to us for the evening. His neighbors are really rigid, so we can’t make a lot of noise. Otherwise, they’ll call the cops on us.”

How could the six of them make enough commotion for that outcome?

Meggie led them through the house to a big room, decorated with the colors of Bunny’s wedding. A sign with Congratulations, Bunny hung from the center of the room. A table laden with food, a chocolate fountain surrounded with strawberries, and a punch bowl with what Fee recognized as more jungle juice, made her mouth water. Personalized plates, cups, and napkins with the words Bunny’s Bachelorette Party and the date were stacked amidst the food and drink.

“Oh my God, you didn’t!” Zoann cried, screaming with laughter. “Megan Caldwell!”

As they all turned to the table Zoann stood in front of, Meggie winked at Fee.

“A chocolate dick cake,” Bailey giggled.

Next to it were treat bags, overflowing, and personalized. Fee grabbed one and went to the only table there with chairs around it. Seating herself, she poured the contents of the bag out, finding edible underwear, glowing condoms, penis lollipops, a blindfold, a bracelet resembling a chain, a small tube of warming lubricant, and a deck of cards with naked people in sexual positions. To Fee’s amazement, everything had been personalized.

Kendall sat, pouring the contents of her bag out, too, and frowning. She picked up each item then dropped it back into the bag as the others joined them. “C’mon, Meggie. Let’s start with the boring games.”

Each of them had drinks. Fee was certain Meggie’s was the nonalcoholic version. As Kendall sounded so put-out and bored, Meggie sipped serenely.

“Yeah, we’ll play some puzzles, for little prizes I got.”

The look on Zoann’s face matched the disappointment Fee felt.

“Anytime you all are nice enough to accept me back into the fold, we can accept Meggie’s bachelorette shower,” Kendall announced.

Fee sighed and Meggie rolled her eyes.

“Let’s not start the night on the wrong foot,” Bailey said, ever the voice of reason. “I’m happy we’re all together as friends and family.”

Although Fee didn’t intend to share any great secrets with Kendall, she had thawed toward her, as had the rest of the girls. First and foremost, they had Johnnie to think about. Second, Kendall was returning to a semblance of normalcy. She’d sworn this time she’d stay on her medicine, even if she got pregnant again.

Meggie looked at her watch. “It’s time for the games, okay?”

“Sure, baby,” Zoann said with forced enthusiasm. “Do you want me to start?”

“Yeah…” Meggie’s voice trailed off at the sound of the doorbell. She scrunched up her nose. “Be right back,” she sighed.

The moment Meggie left, Zoann dropped her head onto the table. “When Meggie said party, as opposed to shower, I was ecstatic. Showers are soooo fucking boring. It looks like we’re in for a long, boring night.”

“Yeah,” Bailey said in low tones. “I don’t want to hurt Meggie’s feelings, but this does sound kind of boring.”

“She did the best she could,” Bunny said in her defense. “Everything’s beautiful. But she knows her husband, so this is what we get.”

“Um, hey,” Meggie said from the doorway, a funny look on her face.

Guilt hit Fee immediately. She was sure Meggie had overheard.

“Meggie, I’m not drinking,” Bunny rushed out. “The baby. If you want to indulge tonight, go right ahead.”

“Oh fuck,” Kendall said, straightening suddenly.

Fee turned, her gaze falling on a police officer.

“We haven’t made any noise,” Bailey said.

“Understood, ma’am,” the man said.

“Fuck, he’s hot,” Zoann whispered.

Fee had to agree. His tall, muscled frame, and gorgeous hazel eyes competed with swaths of dark hair sticking out from his hat and a square jaw.

“But I got a report of noise,” he said, oblivious to the way they were checking him out.

“We haven’t made any fucking noise,” Kendall snapped. “Thanks to Meggie and her wonderful plans, we won’t make any noise, so please leave. You’ve done your checking. Anything else and you’re infringing upon our rights.”
