But he covered her lips with his. Then he drew back.

“I just wanted to thank you. Right now, I’m going out for a walk.”

She watched him cross the room and exit the front door. She turned to Carl.

“Come on,” he said. “We need to get you packed up. You’re going home tonight.”

She gathered her clothes, including the new bustier, and dressed. Carl hadn’t returned the thong and she thought about asking for it, but then smiled at the thought he might want to keep it as a souvenir.

Finally, she returned to the living room carrying her purse and the small gift bag holding her new garment. Carl stood by the door, a duffel bag by his feet.

“I already have the van packed up except for this,” Carl said, then grabbed the handle of the bag and opened the door. “Let’s go.”

She followed him outside, glancing around. “Where’s Erik?” she wanted to talk to him about seeing each other again.

“He’s not coming with us.”

Alarm raced through her. “But...” Her heart ached as she realized Erik was giving her the brush-off. She bit her lip. “I don’t understand. After last night... I was sure that we made a connection.”

“Kalie, I’m sorry but Erik was afraid you might suggest seeing him again and he wanted to make it clear that it wouldn’t happen.”

She shook her head, tears glazing her eyes. “Why?”

“A lot of reasons I guess. The fantasy was pretty intense. He might believe your feelings are superficial based on the intensity of our bringing your fantasy to life. He didn’t really tell me.”

“But he did tell you he felt nothing for me?”

Carl gazed at her kindly. “He didn’t say that. But I do know he’s struggling to get over Sylvia.”

She shook her head. “Then isn’t it a good idea to move on?”

“What you and I believe isn’t the issue here. Erik is strong-willed, and if he’s made up his mind, then that’s it. There’s no way to change it.”

She frowned. Carl might believe that, but Kalie knew what she’d seen in Erik’s eyes last night. She’d seen a need that was deeper and more intense than just lust. He cared for her, she was sure of it, and she would never give up. She swore to herself, right here and now, that she would make it her mission to convince Erik King it was worth giving them a chance!
