Nolan followed his gaze, then jumped back with a scream. “Asshole!”
There in the middle of the ring was the largest stuffed spider he’d ever seen. Zack doubled over, laughing. “Your face!”
Hiding a smirk, Nolan pocketed the key. There were many skills he’d picked up being a project manager, and planning ahead for revenge was one of them. “You’re going to regret that.”
Zack straightened, his face red from laughter. “I can’t wait.”
Six months ago, when he’d met Zack for the first time, Nolan could never have imagined him laughing, looking so happy. Somehow they’d clicked—the broken man and the angry one—and become the best team.
No doubt, getting used to stuffed spiders was going to be part of the adventure of living with Zack. “What’s this one’s name?”
“Biff?”
“That’s a stupid name for a spider.”
“Don’t upset him. Ralph will eat your face off.”
“I love you.” He kissed Zack on the cheek. “But if you buy me any more of those damned things, there will be serious payback.”
Zack blinked at him. “I love you too. What sort of payback?”
He’d been holding this ace in the hole for weeks now. He wandered over to the first aid kit and dug around before pulling out a rubber rat and tossing it at Zack.
Zack jumped back at least three feet. “Shit!”
And Nolan laughed. Life was going to be awesome.
