Jared's eyes glazed over and he began to comply with the mental push,  but Dani grabbed him by the arm and spun him around for a kiss. This  stopped Jared in his tracks. Danielle was able to override Chase's mind  games. Chase stood there fuming. She scowled at him while angry color  rose from the collar of his shirt and crept over his face.

"Can you give me one moment to speak with Chase? I'll only be a minute; I  promise." Dani didn't want to upset Jared, but the conversation wasn't  going to go well, and she had a feeling Jared would get hurt if it came  to a fight. "Just go get us another drink or maybe order something to  eat, my treat. I'll be right over." She smiled and gave him a quick  kiss.

"Alright, but don't be long, okay? We didn't get to finish our slow  dance." He smiled back at her and caressed her cheek before striding  away.

Dani turned back toward Chase, and, thankfully, it was dark in the club,  because he was pissed and his black-eyed freak was showing. His eyes  were dark as night and the tips of his pearly fangs were just barely  visible.

"Let's go somewhere we can talk privately." Chase pointed the way and gave Jared an angry growl as he stomped past.

He led her to what seemed to be a private suite in the back of the club.  It was like a studio apartment, with a king-size bed, a private  bathroom with a shower, a seating area with a wall-mounted TV, and a  tiny kitchen. Dani tried to contain her nerves as she entered the space.  If she screamed, no one would hear her over the music.

"Do you really believe I would hurt you?" He cocked his head and gave her a look of utter disbelief.

"I'm really gonna have to learn to control that, because it is very  annoying when you can hear me all the time. Please make an effort to  stay out of my head," Dani scolded.

"I'm not doing that, Dani. I can't read others. You're projecting onto  me. I'm not trying to listen. Okay, maybe I have tried a few times." He  seemed embarrassed by that admission. He moved farther into the  surprisingly large room. "Please, let me see your injuries. Doc came  back to see you after you left my place. He's called me every day since.  It would be nice if I had something to tell him. You were really sick  when he came to care for you," Chase explained.

"I'd have to get undressed for that, Chase. Why can't I just make an  appointment with the doctor?" Dani didn't want to tempt him, or herself,  by removing her clothes.

"Oh for Christ's sake, Danielle, I've been in bed with you practically  naked twice and managed to control myself both times. Would you give me a  little credit and let me see your damn injuries?"

"Fine," she said with acid in her voice. She turned away from him and  undid the belt she wore, dropping it to the floor. Then she pulled the  dress up over her head and dropped it on the nearby coffee table. She  heard Chase's breath catch when he caught sight of her black-and-blue  back. The bruises spread all the way down to the cleft of her ass that  was barely covered by the black lace thong she wore. She hadn't worn a  bra because it hurt her back. Besides, she didn't really need one. Her  breasts stood up like proud soldiers all on their own. She covered her  breasts with her hands and pivoted so Chase could see the bruising that  reached all the way around her torso and met in the front.

Chase approached her slowly, in wordless astonishment. The sight of her,  so battered and fragile, made him want to rip that female-beating piece  of shit apart all over again. He wanted to sweep her up and rush her  back to his home, where he could protect her the way she deserved to be.  He was instantly hard from the sight of her beautiful body wearing  nothing but a scrap of cloth and high heels, but the bruises that marred  her skin made him irate.

"I don't understand. You should be healed." Chase went to his knees in  front of her to get a closer look. It still looked pretty painful.

"Yeah, well, I'm not. It's not as bad as it was a couple of days ago.  Several ribs were broken, but they're mending." She backed away from  him. "Ask your questions so I can leave."

"Why do think you're not healing? Is it the drug that guy gave you?"

"Don't you have any more important questions? I thought you needed to  know about the attack." She rolled her eyes at him. Chase just watched  patiently, waiting for an answer.

"I told Kayden that I'm not what you think I am. Do you have any other questions?"

"He relayed that message, but I have no idea what that means or why it  should matter. I want you, no matter what, Lovely." Chase stepped closer  to her and touched her face. Just that small contact sent ripples of  heat over his body. "Why don't you sit with me and explain?"

She chuckled. "I don't know what it means either. I'm still trying to  wake up from this nightmare. If you don't have any pertinent questions,  I'll contact Kayden tomorrow."

That had his hackles up. "Why are you always in a hurry to run to some  damn human when you can have anyone you want? And what the hell is this  shit about Kayden, because I will kill him!"

Dani just shook her head. A few things fell into place for her. She was  willing to bet her father's vampire family would have said the word  human with just as much disdain. They wouldn't have accepted her human  mother and the half-breed child. This must be why her father was  completely absent from their lives. It explained her mother's story  about being an outsider to his family. That had been a clever choice of  words. It wasn't about her social or financial standing, but her breed.

"I'm not what you think I am," she whispered. He was still on his knees  in front of her. She sat on the edge of the coffee table. As hard as it  was, she looked him in the eye so he could see her anguish. She reached  for her dress but Chase moved in closer, and she was distracted by his  nearness. She wanted to press her breasts against his firm chest. She  shook her head to clear those lascivious thoughts.

"I was raised with humans. They are my kind. They are all I've ever  known. I need Jared's comfort and friendship to help me stay away from  you. I have wanted you since the first night we met. I can't get you out  of my head. I would give anything to have that morning in your bed back  for just a little while. To hear you say those words again and believe  you meant them."

"I did mean them, Lovely. Please believe me. I want you more than  anything. It kills me to see that guy out there touch you, kiss you." He  gripped her jaw so she couldn't turn away from the pain she caused him.

"Those are my kisses you're giving away. Knowing you're purposely  blocking me out of the connection we share burns me, Lovely." Chase  moved closer to her, spreading her thighs, and granting her wish to be  pressed against his firm chest. He tipped her head back with a finger so  she was looking into his black eyes. She wanted to give in and take the  kiss he offered. His hot breath blew over her face and his chest rose  and fell, causing sweet friction to tease her nipples. She fought the  need to take everything he wanted to give her. She weakly raised her  hand and placed her fingers against his lips, but he easily moved her  fingers and moved in to taste her. He licked and nibbled her lips until  she gave in with a groan and opened her mouth to him. His tongue  explored and toyed with hers until need spread through her blood like  fire. They held on to each other and made love with their mouths for  several moments before she pulled back. It was hard to remember he  belonged to someone else when he was touching and tasting her.

"Don't push me away yet. Not yet." He nuzzled her neck. "Let me have  just a taste, please." She didn't struggle when he rose to his feet and  lifted her into his arms. The scrape of his shirt against her hardened  nipples made her shiver.

"Are you cold?" he asked as he laid her out on the big bed. She answered  with a shake of her head. He removed his shirt and shoes while she  watched. Chase was tall and broad shouldered. The lines of his tailored  clothing hid the rippling muscles that played beneath them. He was  perfectly formed, a god, an Adonis. For the moment, if she let go of her  racing thoughts and forgot the world on the other side of that door, he  could be hers. If only for tonight, he was hers.

He crawled in beside her and pulled her body against his. He lifted her  leg up to rest on his hip, opening her to him. The heat of his solid  length burned through his pants and warmed her belly. She wanted him.  Every cell in her body screamed for her to accept him, to hold him like  this forever.

Chase licked at her mouth, begging entrance, and she opened for him. It  was like swallowing a mouthful of summer. Chase's flavor was like the  taste of saltwater taffy by the ocean, sweet and warm on her tongue. His  fingers burned a slow trail from her collarbone all the way down the  center of her body. She was so absorbed by his drugging kisses that she  jumped when he slid his hand into her panties and cupped her mound. He  hummed into her mouth and fondled her teasingly, barely moving for a  bit. She gasped when he slid his middle finger between her damp folds  and began lightly brushing small circles over and over her clit. Another  finger followed, and the tension built with the added pressure he  applied. She climbed higher, trying to follow the sensation. She felt  the edge of something she wanted desperately.
