The Unexpected Wedding(34)
Camille waved to her. Her wave looked like she was waving to a crowd from her throne on a beauty pageant float.
Doggone it. Too late to duck away.
Becky Lee pasted a smile on her face and continued toward Camille.
“Oh, Becky Lee. I just heard the news. You’re getting married.”
“I am.”
“Well, the funniest thing happened this week.” Camille’s voice held a fake conspiratorial tone. “Delbert ran into Mr. Grayson of Grayson Enterprises right here in Comfort Crossing, of all places. Mr. Grayson said he was visiting his son. Delbert mentioned he didn’t know a Grayson in town, and Mr. Grayson said his son goes by the last name Gray.”
Camille reached out and touched Becky Lee’s arm. Becky Lee tried to keep herself from jerking her arm away.
“That wouldn’t be your Cal Gray would it? You’re marrying a Grayson?” Camille’s eyes were wide with disbelief and a not-so-subtle look of he’s-too-good-for-you.
“He has nothing to do with Grayson Enterprises.” Not that it was any of Camille’s business.
Camille continued as if she hadn’t even heard Becky Lee. “You know, the Graysons are a powerful family. Lucky you, he’s quite the catch.”
“As I said, Cal has nothing to do with his family.”
“Well, of course, he does. He can change his last name, but he’s still a Grayson.” Camille spoke to Becky Lee as if she were explaining something to a toddler.
“I’ve gotta run. Thanks for the good wishes.” Becky Lee was very aware the Camille hadn’t offered best wishes or anything remotely close to it.
“I hope Delbert and I get an invite.”
“Oh, it’s just going to be family.” Not that she would invite Camille to her wedding if she were having a two hundred person wedding.
Becky Lee turned and hurried away.
“See you soon,” Camille called out.
Not if I see you first.

Cal looked around the park for Becky Lee. She’d promised to meet him and Scotty here. They were going to tell Scotty about the wedding. Cal paced nervously back and forth, watching Scotty play in the fort, while keeping an eye out for Becky Lee.
He finally spotted her coming down the walkway and waved. He watched her carefully as she approached. She was dressed in a simple sundress which seemed to be her preferred outfit on these hot summer days when she wasn’t working. This dress was a pale teal color and she’d piled her hair up in the messy way he thought looked so good on her.
He was going to marry this woman.
Doubts and nervousness welled up. Why would someone as pretty and smart as Becky Lee even consider marrying him?
He knew why. Normally a woman like Becky Lee wouldn’t have taken a second look at him. Well, back when he was a Grayson, he had beautiful women who wanted him… but it was all about his money. Once he no longer had that Grayson name and money, he’d lost a lot of his allure. Plus, it was kind of hard to have a relationship when he moved around all the time.
“Hi.” Becky Lee looked up at him with a nervous smile on her face. “So are we ready to do this?”
“I guess so. Yes.” He looked over and saw Scotty watching them. He quickly wrapped one arm around Becky Lee and bent down and kissed her on the lips.
The deliciously soft lips.
She offered a little gasp but kissed him back tentatively.
Cal pulled his lips off hers and leaned close to her ear. “Scotty is watching.”
“Oh.” Becky Lee’s face was covered in the most adorable blush.
He kind of liked making her blush and catching her off guard.
Cal turned and waved at Scotty to come over. The boy came running, skidded to a stop in front of them, and eyed them both suspiciously.
“We’ve got something to tell you, kiddo.”
“What’s that?” Scotty looked from Cal to Becky Lee.
“Um. Well, we’re getting married.” Cal watched closely for Scotty’s reaction.
“Who is?” Scotty’s eyes narrowed.
“Becky Lee and I.”
“Really?” The boy cocked his head, eyeing them both.
“Yes, this Saturday.” Becky Lee’s voice came out with a bit of a croak when she said the word Saturday.
Heck, he couldn’t blame her. It was a lot to process.
“Yes, this weekend. Isn’t that great?” Cal looked at the boy, still hoping for a positive response.
“Well, that’s cool. Miss Becky is fun and she cooks a lot better than you do. Can I go play again?”
Cal laughed out loud. “Yes, you can go play.”
Scotty started racing away then paused. “Hey, I don’t have to wear a tie or anything to the wedding do I?”
“Not if you don’t want to,” Becky Lee assured him.
