The Scarred One(20)
“Either way, you were very soothing to me during that day, which is strange. You helped me a lot.”
“I helped clean up the mess. I didn’t do anything else.” He stopped at traffic lights and turned to look at her. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. I will be fine when everything gets cleared up and we don’t have to worry about anything.” She stared out of the window for the rest of the journey.
What else could she say to him?
He dealt with the traffic while she kept thinking about life. She needed to phone the hotel to let them know she wasn’t going to come in. The moment she made that call she was going to be unemployed.
The time passed, and he put some music on the radio. She hummed to some of the tunes that she knew.
By the time he pulled up outside of a building she’d never seen before she was starving. The building looked like a new one and was surrounded by a steel gate. There were a couple more cars parked within the facility.#p#分页标题#e#
“Is this where you live?” she asked.
“Yeah.” He climbed out of the car and moved to her side. She watched him open the door then reached out to grab her waist. His hands were so large as he helped her down from the vehicle. When she was around Henry, he made her feel small by how big he was.
Slowly, he lowered her to the floor as if she didn’t weigh a thing.
He grabbed her suitcase, and together they made their way into the building. On the outside next to a wall she watched him press a card inside then type in a number.
“Are we entering a bank or something?” she asked.
“Nah, this is just a really secure building.”
A man sat at the reception desk.
Staying by Henry’s side, she followed him to the lift. The sterile, clinical feel of the building unnerved her.
“Is this where Caleb lives?”
“No. We both had an apartment in one of the blocks over there.” He pointed to one of the tall building that didn’t look too far as they travelled up the glass elevator, but she imagined was far enough to walk. “This is where I go when I want to relax, get away from everything.”
“How long has it been since you came here last?” she asked.
“A couple of years. The building has a cleaning service that makes sure nothing is wrong with the place.”
“Why has it been so long since you came here last?” She was curious about him. When she’d first met him, he had come across as a brutish man who had no consideration for women. He threw in her face the fact he slept with whores, and there was no filter between his brain and mouth.
“There are a lot of memories here.”
The elevator dinged, and the doors opened. She followed behind him as he moved to the end of the hall and turned left. He stopped and used another key to get into his apartment.
Henry dropped her bag on the floor and allowed her inside.
Staring around the space, she stepped into his world. He closed the door, and she wasn’t afraid. She was learning fast that Henry wasn’t the kind of man she first thought. He was a killer, but he wouldn’t kill just anyone.
“This is going in my safe.” He pulled her gun from his back.
“Hey, I need to learn how to use that.”
“I’ll teach you how to use it soon, but I’m not doing it while you’re hurting.” He disappeared, and she stayed still within his space. She didn’t know what to do. This was his apartment, not hers.
“There, I feel happier having you here with your gun safely away.”
“You’re overreacting.”
“I’m not. You’re completely insane. I can’t believe you bought a gun and don’t have the first clue how to use it.” He picked up her case. “Come on, I’ll show you to your room.”
She moved behind him looking at everything she saw. His apartment was clean, completely clean, but then she remembered there were cleaners who took care of the apartment.
The walls were white, and he had black furniture. From what she saw his space was normal for life as a bachelor. Nothing was out of place, and there was nothing personal to the rooms.
“This is my room. There is a connecting door between the two rooms, but you don’t have to worry about me hurting you or taking advantage.”
She glanced down at her awful clothing. No, she didn’t imagine he’d take advantage of her. He’d need to be attracted to her, and there was no chance of that.
“Hey, what’s the matter?” He tilted her chin back.
“Nothing. I know you won’t take advantage.” She tried to pull away, but he wouldn’t let her. Lydia liked the touch of his fingers way too much. He made her think about how good it would feel to have those fingers playing with other parts of her.#p#分页标题#e#
