The Lover Beneath Me(17)

“Come on Addie. Let’s get you out of the pool now,” I teased her as I reached out my hand. She narrowed her eyes. “I’m not going to do the same thing, Addie.” I sighed as I held out my hand, insisting she take it. She reached for it, clasping her wet hand in mine. A small grin appeared on her face as she reached the edge and pulled me in.

“That’s your lesson, asshole,” she snarled and jumped out of the pool. I laughed as I emerged.

“Make sure you dry off. Don't want others seeing your sexy body,” I shouted as I jumped out.

“Bite me, asshole,” she said as she slammed the door of the poolroom and left.

See? My Addie.

“You have to like her. There’s no other reason for you to be around her this much,” Rafe noted as he lay down on the stage.

“Screw off,” I hissed.

“Oh, my God, Daimon’s gone and got himself a girl,” Rafe kept adding.

“Would you stop?” I snarled. I was nervous. I decided that would be the day I’d show Addie the letter and tell her I liked her, a lot. I figured it out late one night; it had to be that I liked her. I played my violin until my fingers ached. At first, I used to play to remind my father of her, my mom. To make him pay for what he had done. That was why he kept breaking them. But then again, playing became my only outlet. I played because I had to. I played for my mother who abandoned me. I played for the deep scars that lay on my heart. I played for my Addie. I was going to tell her. I was going to apologize and tell her how much her words meant to me. How much she meant to me.

“You have to be kidding me,” Clara said in shock as she emerged from the side door with two of her friends. “Rafe please tell me you’re fucking with me?” Clara said to him. I laughed as I watched Rafe lean up and look at her with his eyebrows furrowed.

“Sweetheart, if I was fucking you, you would know it,” Rafe mocked.

“Gross, Rafe. You know my heart only belongs to Daimon,” Clara reached out to me but I moved.

“I’m going to find Addie,” I muttered to Rafe.

“That’s too bad, Clara. It seems he likes someone else.” Rafe winked.

“ADDIE…ADDIE…ADDIE!” I kept yelling out her name through the hallway. I loved it when I had to chase her. She stopped and waited. I taught her well.

“What is it?” she gritted her teeth.

“Oh, is Addie mad? Sorry.” I smiled down at her, as her little hazel eyes drank me in. “I thought since it’s our last day together, I’d make it special.” Yeah I knew Addie thought I was good looking, but it wouldn’t matter if she didn’t like me back.

“Leave me alone, Daimon,” she spat out.

“Oh, why?” I pouted, putting my arm around his shoulders. “You’re my best bud. You know that, right, Addie?”

I usually felt calm around her, but today, I was fucking nervous, worried she would reject me, but fuck it. I wanted her and I would make it up to her somehow.

“Addie, you know I like you, right?” I said so sweetly.

“Look, let me go do my valedictorian speech and leave me alone,” she pleaded.

“This is different. You usually tell me to fuck off and fight back.” I was surprised at her, Addie never begged, more like ordered and yelled.

“Well, today is our last day here and I just want it to be over,” she admitted.

“Sure thing, Addie.” I winked and walked away, knowing that after the grad ceremony, I would win her over, finally.

I heard she received a Yale scholarship. Addie was fucking smart. I didn’t even have to try when I was accepted in Harvard business school. My grandfather was proud of me at least. My dad and my stepmom didn’t care. The only thing they had in common was their love affair with my grandfather’s money.

I fucked around outside of the auditorium, trying to figure out what to do exactly. Do I just run up and tell her, or should I kiss her making her understand she was mine? I was startled by her scream. I ran in and saw Addie drenched. She looked in my direction, clenching her teeth at me. She composed herself and just said her speech like nothing had happened. Fuck me! When she was done, I ran after her and found her behind the curtains.

“Hey, Addie?” I cried out. “Are you okay?”

She looked up at me with a murderous glare. “Nice touch, jerk! You couldn’t just let me have today. You had to do it; you just had to. Well thank you, Daimon, for quite possibly ruining my last day of high school. Congratulations,” she said sarcastically and started to walk away.

“Hey, wait a minute…Addie?” I grabbed her arm and pulled her back. That was when she reached from behind her and slapped me across the face.
