Surrendering(65)
His blood was paradise. It was powerful. It was hers.
He shook her slightly. “Kate. Listen to me. If you take any more, you will hurt me. Is that what you want?”
Yes. No. No…she didn’t want to hurt him. But surely taking a bit more wouldn’t hurt such a strong vampire, would it?
He threw her to her back, restraining her. Keeping her from what was rightfully hers. Damn him! She began to struggle in earnest.
“Kate, love. This is a blood high that’s got you, baby. Shake it loose. You can fight it. Come back to me. Please.”
She wanted to heed his words. She wanted to, but she couldn’t. Something way beyond her control was pulling at her to take, take, take. A burst of strength flashed through her body and she lunged toward his beckoning flesh.
Chapter 40
Kate
She was crying. She looked beaten down, hopeless. Kate could actually feel Sarah’s despair run through her as though it were her own.
She saw Sarah get up and pace around the room. Her eyes didn’t look as dull as the last time she’d seen her. The crooks of her elbows were no longer bruised and she had different clothes on from the last time she’d seen her.
Kate felt utterly helpless. How was Sarah ever going to escape? Suddenly she remembered Olivia’s training and she felt a little less helpless. She pulled herself back from the scene at hand to study her surroundings closely.
White, nondescript walls. No windows. Metal framed, twin-sized bed with dingy yellow sheets. Concrete floor. Steel door, no handle on the inside. Security camera in the ceiling corner. Nothing else.
Crap! How was this going to help? Concentrate Kate. There has to be something here.
Kate shut her eyes and used all of her senses. Did she hear soft crying? She did, but when she opened her eyes, it wasn’t Sarah. Her crying had died to a few hiccups for now. There was someone else close by, in another room.
She closed her eyes again and listened hard. She heard the crying again, only louder this time. Kate concentrated on the source of the crying, willing herself to the source. The sobbing now sounded like it was right next to her. When she opened her eyes, she was in another room, exactly like the one Sarah was captive in, except this wasn’t Sarah.
It was another young woman. A natural blond, with the most beautiful baby blue eyes she had ever seen. And sweet Jesus, she was pregnant. About seven months, Kate thought.
Oh God.
She quickly looked around and found nothing that would help identify where these women were being held, so she closed her eyes yet again and concentrated, sending out all of her senses.
More quiet sobbing. She concentrated on that sound and like last time, was drawn to it. She found it belonged to yet another young woman, only this time she was not alone. Two very large, very scary men were forcibly taking her from her room.
Correction…vampires.
Kate froze. Yes she was invisible, but she didn’t know if vampires had different senses when it came to her kind. A few seconds ticked away and they didn’t appear to notice anything out of the ordinary. The girl was now crying hysterically, begging them to stop, as they dragged her from the room.
Kate followed.
They took her to the same surgical room she’d seen Sarah in a few nights ago. They strapped her to the same horrific table and injected her with the same IV fluid bag, which stopped her struggling after a minute. Several more vampires entered the room, lust clouding their faces. As gut wrenching as it was to know this girl was going to be violated by these animals, she had to do her job if she was going to help save their lives.
Before turning away from the horrific scene in front of her, she looked carefully at all of the vampires and memorized their faces, so she could describe them later. Next, she looked around the room for anything that could identify where they were being held.
She noticed a small window in the left corner of the room. She noted the window looked to be at about ground level, which meant the majority of this building was underground. Excitement bubbled in her. She went to the window and, though it was dark outside, her senses were sharpened, so she could easily make out an old, decrepit barn, complete with a windmill and a forest of trees in the background.
She also noted the nearly full moon was off to the left and hope that would help give her placement of this spot. She felt herself awakening, so she took one last look around the room to see if she thought anything else would help before she was pulled away. She so wished she could prevent what was occurring in front of her, but couldn’t and couldn’t bear to watch it unfold either.
She closed her eyes and willed herself back to Sarah. She was now lying in bed with her eyes closed. She pushed all of the hope and calmness within her toward Sarah.
