"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Xander said. "I just wanted to talk to you both about a decision that I've made."
"And what would that be?" I asked.
"I'm handing the pack over to the true alpha," Xander said.
Lucien and I both gaped at him. "What are you talking about?"
"You know," Xander said, smiling at me. "That night at the club, when we fought in the parking lot? You bled me and you dominated me and by all rights, you are . and have been . the true leader of the pack since then."
"Xander, don't do this," I whispered.
"I've thought about it long and hard, and Caleb and I have discussed it at length. It's not what I want anymore," he said. "With the pack in your hands, I would gladly serve you."
"They will not follow me, Xander."
"They've been mad because you haven't stepped up and taken over," he said hesitantly. "They think you care more about the vampires than you do them."
"That's not true; I don't value one over the other."
"I know that, but all they see is you spending time with the vampires and shucking your position as pack leader." Xander sighed. "So what do you say? Will you take on the pack as your own?"
It was too much to decide in a matter of moments. It was like him asking me which donor I wanted for dinner and expecting to get an immediate answer. Taking over the pack was so much more complicated than that, and I needed time to mull it over.
"Give me a few days to think about it?"
"I can do that," Xander said with a nod. "And on that note, I need to get back to Caleb. He's waiting to play video games."
"How's he doing?"
"Still a little sorry about everything, but Logan's been a huge help."
"Good," Lucien said. "I'm hoping Logan can break through some of that pain and get our Caleb back."
Lucien's words made me smile. Nikolas wasn't the only one who had been impressed when Caleb had thrown himself between me and that bullet. In fact, I think the coven was well on their way to getting over the things he'd done in the past.
Xander slid off the bed and walked to the door. "I'll leave you two perverts alone."
"Xander?" Lucien called his name, and when he turned, Lucien laughed. "Make sure the door is closed behind you."
