Soul Mates 04: Secrets(16)
"Yeah?" The tension in him was growing by the second, and I wondered why I hadn't sensed it before. "Guess that's how it goes with things like that."
He nodded. "I could have done without seeing some of them. But the funeral was nice&as nice as a funeral could be, I guess. So, tell me about what has happened while I was gone?"
"Oh, not too much. We've got couple new werewolves. They were rescued up in Colorado and brought here to start over. Other than Donald's death, that's about it."
"Why are you lying to me?" Lucien sat up, shaking his head.
"What are you talking about? I'm not lying to you."
Not exactly.
"What is it that you are trying to hide from me, Peter?"
"I'm not hiding things, exactly; there are just some things I'd rather not talk about right now. Can't you understand that?"
"Not particularly." Lucien got out of bed and headed for the bathroom. "But you know what? You want to keep your secrets? That's fine; just don't come running to me when it all falls apart. Goddamn, Peter, why can't you just be honest with me?"
I lay there, wondering the exact same thing. Could I really be honest with Lucien about this shit with Simon and expect him not to blow a gasket? My guess was no, considering the way he was getting nine kinds of worked up just because he thought I was holding something back.
Lucien walked out of the bathroom, dressed in a pair of pants and a long-sleeved, black shirt. He didn't say a word as he gathered his phone and keys. He opened the door and paused, but didn't look back.
"I will not beg for your honesty."
The door slammed and I sighed, shaking my head. There was no way I would be able to keep Simon's secret for long.especially while sharing the same bed with Lucien. I couldn't shield for that long continuously, and I had no doubt that Lucien wouldn't leave this alone until he found out what was going on.
The only way this could be handled, for now, was to move out of the bedroom and give him his space.and me, mine. I would miss him, but I wouldn't miss the fighting.
I rolled across the bed and picked up the phone, dialing the extension for the kitchen. Adam answered and I said a small prayer of thanks. Simon wasn't the one I needed for this. He'd feel too guilty, ask too many damned questions.
"Adam? Can I get your help for a moment, please?"
"Of course, sir, I'll be right there."
I took a few minutes to shower and when I came out of the bathroom, Adam was waiting in the middle of the room, hands clasped behind his back.
"How may I help you?" he asked.
"I need you to help me gather a few of my things and move me to the room down the hall." He seemed startled by my request, but didn't say a word other than "yes, sir." Brownie points for him. "Not everything, just the things I wear and use the most."
"Clothes, boots, robes, toiletries&" He looked around the room. "Do you want any of your personal décor?"
"It's all Lucien's," I said with a shrug. "This isn't forever, Adam, I just need some space for a while.and Lucien does, too, whether he thinks so or not."
"I understand, sir."
"Hell, I don't even understand, Adam."
* * *
Adam made quick work of getting me moved to the bedroom down the hall. He was fast and efficient and didn't ask questions. He made the bed up with fresh sheets and turned, looking around the room.
"If you need anything else&"
"I'll call," I said. "Thank you for your help, Adam. I appreciate it."
"Any time, sir," he said.
After a quick bow of respect, he left the room. I glanced around, grimacing. It was a nice room, but it was nowhere near as nice as mine and Lucien's. Well&Lucien's, for now.
I'd just sat down on the bed to plug my cell phone in when there was a sharp rap on the door. It opened and a furious Lucien stood in the doorway. His brows were knitted tightly, black eyes almost glowing red.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?"
"Um, right now?" I gestured to my phone. "I'm plugging in my phone."
"You know what I mean." He came into the room and slammed the door behind him. "Why are you in this room?"
"We need our space, Lucien. It's pretty obvious to me that it's long overdue."
"We've had plenty of space in the past week. Is it that bad having me home again? Does it interfere with your fun?"
"Excuse me?" I stood and faced him. "What the fuck are you talking about?"
"I guess if you're in your own room, you don't have to feel guilty about fucking around with him in mine." Lucien shook his head. "That's fine. You can stay here for all I fucking care."
