So Far Gone in You(Primal Heat 2)(8)

“Are you sure it’s not one of your ex-lovers?” Karidon asked as he dressed.

“Might be,” Coop teased, though he knew that wasn’t the truth. He highly doubted Olin was that pissed at him, and Olin was the only lover Coop had had in a long while.

“How’s the wound?” Karidon asked as they started to make their way back to the car.

“I’ll live.” Hell if Coop was going to complain about some torn flesh. He’d had worse.

“Ain’t that the truth,” Karidon said and then chucked Coop on the arm.

“Son of a bitch!”

“Oh!” Karidon’s dark eyes widen. “Damn, my bad. Sorry.”

“How the hell did you forget that quickly?” Coop hissed and clutched his wound. “Stay the hell away from me, you functioning moron.”

Karidon chuckled. “It was an accident.” He wiggled his brows. “Or was it?”

“Just get into the Jeep,” Coop grumbled. “I’ll call Talyn while you drive.”

“And the guys in the woods?”

“They can find their own way out,” Coop said as he slid into the passenger seat. “I’ll send the cops to pick them up.”

Tomorrow morning.

He eased the phone from his belt clip and called Talyn, warning him about what had just happened and the phony call about the coyotes.

“And they said there’s a contract out on both of you?” Talyn sounded truly perplexed. “But why?”

“The two numbnuts hadn’t a clue why they were trying to take us down. They’d just heard a rumor.” Coop wanted to go back there and slam his fist in both their faces. A rumor. What the hell was the world coming to?

“Just get your asses back here,” Talyn said. “Don’t stop for anything.”

Karidon motioned for Coop’s attention. When he looked over, he saw the gas gauge needle was almost on the red. They wouldn’t make it back if they didn’t stop for gas.

“Just one stop,” Coop said. “Need gas.”

“I’m sending Zach and Jake your way,” Talyn said. “Text Zach and tell him what gas station you’re stopping at. Watch your damn backs.”

“Always,” Coop said before he hung up. “Great, we’re going to be around gas pumps with people out to kill us. I hope they don’t blow us up. I don’t look good crispy fried.”

“No one knows we’re stopping,” Karidon pointed out. “We should be fine.” He frowned at Coop. “Or not.”

“Love your optimism.” Coop glanced out the window, checking traffic to see if anyone was following them. “Which station are you stopping at?”

“There’s a BP two blocks from here.”

That wouldn’t give Zach and Jake enough time to get to them, but they had no choice. Hell if Coop was going to be stuck on the side of the road somewhere, a sitting duck. He texted the gas station to Zach.

That’s too far. Can you wait at least 30 min? Zach texted back.

On fumes. No can do. Coop texted back.

Will try to get there. Zach texted.

Coop slid his phone back into the clip and sighed.

Some days it didn’t pay to get out of bed. But it had paid today. If anything, he had enjoyed his time with Olin in the bathroom. Would the guy want a repeat?

No repeats, remember? Get his sexy little body out of your head. Problem was, he couldn’t. If it wasn’t for Olin’s snarky mouth, he would be everything Coop looked for in a guy. He was slim, sexy, and had the most gorgeous green eyes. Coop was getting hard just thinking about how responsive Olin had been.

Fuck, I want another go at the guy. Coop growled to himself. His dick wasn’t listening to him.

He cleared his mind when they pulled into the gas station. Coop hopped out and kept watch as Karidon filled the tank. There was a minivan one island over, but he doubted soccer mom would shoot them in front of the kiddies. Two islands over, there was an elderly man gazing too closely at the card reader and scratching his head.

Coop glanced at Karidon and then went over to help the elderly man. “The card goes in this way,” Coop said as he took the man’s credit card and slid it into the reader, quickly pulling it out and handing it back to the gentleman.

“Why thank you.” The elderly man smiled at Coop. “These newfangled machines always confuse me.”

Coop grinned as he lightly patted the man on his shoulder. “Not a problem. Have a good day.”

“Oh, can you help me with one more thing?” the man asked. The skin around his eyes crinkled as he smiled widely.

Coop nodded. “Sure, whatever you need.”

The guy pulled his light jacket back and snatched a gun from his waistband. Damn the old timer was fast. “Get into my car, or I’ll put a bullet in you.”
