Shelter Me(81)

By:Kathy Coopmans

“How I can resist you, sweetheart? Let me change and I will be right out.”

A few minutes later Adam comes back outside and dives into the pool to play with the girls. I turn my head to say something to Erin and her eyes are completely fixed on Adam and his every move.

“You like him, don’t you?”

My words bring her out of her daze. When she looks at me, I can tell she does.

“Erin, did something happen between you and Adam?”

“No. Why would you think that?”

“Well, you’re sitting here practically eye fucking my cousin, so tell me.”

She takes a deep breath.

“It was when Adam came down to get Lucy. One night the girls had fallen asleep at my house, so Adam stayed over for a little while. We had a few drinks, and the next thing I knew he had me pinned up against the wall and we were kissing. He broke off the kiss and backed away from me, and we stood there looking at each other for a few minutes. Then, he just walked out and left. I haven’t been able to get him out of my mind ever since. I have no idea why he stopped and we haven’t talked about it.”

“Wasn’t the ride here a little uncomfortable for the two of you?”

“Not really. He acts like nothing ever happened.”

I turn and look at my cousin who is so tough on the outside but has such a kind soul, and then at Erin, who still looks lost in her own world. I bring my hand to rest on the top of her knee.

“I can talk to him...”

“No, Shayne. Just let it go. Sierra and I are staying with him for now and I don’t want to be uncomfortable. It’s fine. Really, it is.”

Fine my ass, I think to myself. I know Erin, and after everything she has been through with her ex-husband Max, she deserves to be happy more than anyone I know.

Chapter Twenty-Six

After a light lunch outside by the pool, we get the girls changed and the three of them decide they are heading back to Adam’s home to get settled in. Erin invites Lucy over to spend the night, which I think is a good idea because she has been cooped up in this house with me all week. Lucy and I pack her a bag and we all say our goodbyes. Erin and I decide that I will stop over tomorrow to show her around town.

I lock up the house after everyone leaves. I feel so tired, but I know I need to find out for sure if I am pregnant, so I drive down to the pharmacy to get a few pregnancy tests. I know that Luke is not going to be happy I came by myself, but I need to know for sure before he gets home.

The drive is short, and when I get to the store I grab three different pregnancy tests off of the shelf. I go to stand in the checkout lane, not paying much attention to my surroundings. I place the tests on the counter and let my eyes wander. Shit! There is Ben standing a few isles over, and of course today just so happens to be the day the checkout lady seems to be taking her sweet time. She asks me if this is my first baby and tells me how exciting it is. As soon as I pay, I bolt out the door and get into my car as fast as I can, praying to God he did not see me.

I make it back home as fast as I can, practically sprinting inside the house. Tossing my keys on the counter, I run to the bathroom and splash cold water on my face. I notice I am shaking badly. I pull one of the tests out of the paper bag and follow the instructions. Placing it on the counter, I stand there pacing back and forth for what seems like hours as I keep checking the time.

Finally, it’s time. I pick up the stick from the counter and a smile spreads across my face as I stare at the big plus sign telling me I am pregnant. I set it back down and bring my hands down to my stomach.

“Your Daddy is going to be so excited about this.” I tell him or her.

Thinking back to when we conceived, I know it was the first night we were together when Luke made such mad passionate love to me. Smiling to myself, I pick up the stick and leave the bag with the other ones on the counter, exiting the bathroom just as Luke is walking in. He sets his briefcase down on the floor. Looking at his face, he looks so worn down and tired. I shove the stick in my back pocket and walk toward him.

“Hey you. Rough day?” I ask.

“Fuck, it was the worst day I have had in a long time,” he says, pulling me against his chest.

“What’s going on?”

“Let me get a beer and I will tell you everything. Do you want one?”

Knowing I can’t have one because of the baby, I tell him no as I follow him down the hall into the kitchen. Taking a beer out of the fridge and twisting off the cap, he takes a long pull of it and then places it back on the counter.

“Come here, tesoro bella.”

In a flash, I am pressing into his hard, muscled body. Luke slams his mouth down onto mine and kisses me with such passion. After several minutes of our tongues and teeth clashing against one another, we break apart and stand there staring at each other.
