Shelter Me(17)

By:Kathy Coopmans

“Do you believe him?”

I think to myself briefly before answering. That is the million dollar question and something I’ve been thinking about constantly since he told me. Do I, or don’t I?

“I don’t know,” I say. “I mean, obviously I believe him about the threats since we received them as well, but the rest? We were both over eighteen at the time. It’s not like his parents had the right to force him to go with them, but he did, and he left me. In the end, no matter what the reason, it still amounts to the same thing.”

“Hmm. I see,” Adam states. “I talked to Luke not long after the night he came to the house and he told me the exact same thing, that the man who threatened his father is dead now. He died from a heart attack or some shit like that, so they felt it was safe to come back. I wasn’t convinced the danger was over, so I never mentioned it to mom. I’m still not completely sure. Are you going to see him again?”

“Yes, tonight. We are having dinner at Mangiare’s. You know I’ve been craving their pizza.”

“And when do you plan on telling him about Lucy?”

“I don’t know yet, but we did agree last night that we both wanted to try to get to know each other again, so I’m going to see how the next couple of days go. I plan on telling him about her before you get back here next Wednesday. So, that gives me six days to come up with a way to tell him.”

Adam reaches across the table and grabs my hand. Looking me in the eye, he says, “Mom would be so proud of you right now, you know that, right?”

“I do,” I reply softly, nodding my head slightly.

“Good, now let’s go to the bank and get everything done so you can have the rest of the day to get yourself ready.”

After showering, I put on some capris and a light shirt and throw my hair up into a pile of loose curls on top of my head. I make my way downstairs to grab Adam and we drive to the bank, where we are greeted by a very young, nice looking man in a dark gray suit. He eyes me up and down before taking us back into his office to go over some legal documents pertaining to my aunt. He explains to both of us what we already know; everything is to be split evenly between us and the house is to be put in both of our names. He seems to be very hasty for some unknown reason, like he can’t wait to get this meeting done, and I can tell Adam is starting to get very pissed off.

I watch as he lifts his eyebrows and looks at the man, who I just now realize never even gave us his name. What in the blazing hell? We are mourning the loss of our loved one and this douche bag is practically pushing us out the damn door. I start to say something, but Adam just shakes his head. We both sign the necessary documents and leave the arrogant son of a bitch without even giving him a proper goodbye.

As we’re getting into Adam’s truck, I am raging, fucking mad.

“What the hell was that all about, Adam? That piece of shit shouldn’t even be working at a bank if he is going to treat people that way. Why didn’t you let me tell him to take his stick and shove it farther up his ass?”

“Because Ben is not worth it, and his anger is directed toward me. Last summer I fucked his ex- girlfriend and he can’t seem to get over it. End of story.”

“Oh my God, Adam! You are such a dick!” That is about all I can get out of my mouth before we both burst out laughing so hard, I’m afraid I am going to pee my pants. “Get my ass home, you asshole. I have a date to get ready for.”

Chapter Six

With speed racer at the wheel, we are home in five minutes and I am still laughing. We pull into the drive and Adam pecks me lightly on the cheek. “Have a good time tonight, brat, and don’t be afraid to let yourself go. The two of you deserve this second chance, so don’t be afraid. I love you, Shayne.”

“I love you, too, Adam. And, you go have some fun tonight, too.”

“Oh, I will. Now go.”

I climb out of the truck and enter the house, then sit down on the couch to call Lucy. She rattles on for about a minute, informing me that Erin is taking them to the zoo before telling me she loves me and hanging up. I sit there and stare at the phone thinking, What in the hell is everyone in such a hurry for today?

After throwing a load of laundry in, I decide I better look and see what I want to wear tonight. I enter my room and start going through all the clothes in my walk in closet. Believe me when I say that I over pack. I brought three suitcases full of clothes with me and I packed two suitcases for Adam to bring back with Lucy. I start rummaging through all the clothes and decide on a long, flowing stretch maxi skirt that has a high slit in front that shows off my long legs. I pair it with a light turquoise tank that has a split up the back to show off some of my bare skin. I decide to wear my rhinestone, t-strap, black sandals to finish off the look.
