She Used to Be the Sweetest Girl(60)

It was early Sunday morning and instead of going to church, Brix was over his house for one reason. She had finally made up in her mind to go see him. All his begging and pleading had started to become a nuisance. She found it ironic that when he up and disappeared, he had not one thing to say until months later. Now, all of a sudden he was persistent on Brix hearing him out. She was going to do just that and speak her mind as well. He could keep the formalities and lustful stares to himself.

“No. I’m fine,” she replied.

Wherever he had been hiding out at, had treated his body well. His once light skin, was sun kissed with a beautiful tan Brix couldn’t help but adore. Drew had always been fine to her. He had the boy next door look to him and she loved it. His clean cut fade and pink lips are what attracted her to him. He wasn’t the tallest guy, standing at 5’8, but was taller than her so it worked out. Taking a seat across from her at the kitchen table, Drew just stared. He could tell by her body language that she didn’t want to really be here, but she needed to be. What he had to tell her had to be revealed today or he was going to lose it.

The two years he was gone gave him time to get over why he left, but being back in his hometown and around Brix pulled all those emotions out from deep within. The sounds of him slowly rotating his glass of apple juice, were the only noises that could be heard. They were both dead silent, waiting for the other to speak up. The conversations over the phone weren’t even this awkward. Deciding to finally break the ice, Brix spoke up. Hopefully whatever he had to say was quick and she could go home. Her attitude today was off the Richter and she could feel her skin getting hot thinking of the lie he was about to tell.

“Why did you want to see me so bad?” she asked him.

“It’s been two years Brix. I missed you.”

“That’s not my fault. I’m not the one who broke up with you and went into hiding. If you knew you were going to miss me so much, your ass should have never left,” she spat.

Drew’s eyes went wide as he listened to the words she spat come out like venom. He was sure that she hated him by now; it was only right.

“I had to leave. It wasn’t up to me. I left so that I wouldn’t hurt you more than you already were.”

“You don’t do that to someone you claim to love Drew. How would you have felt if I up and disappeared and you didn’t hear from me in months. Let alone see me for two years. TWO YEARS Drew! Who does that!” she said, slapping her hand on the table. She was beyond pissed at this point.

“So you wanted me to stay and hurt you? Huh? Is that what you wanted? I couldn’t and you don’t even know what the fuck I was going through once I left Brix. I left to protect your heart; that’s all I ever wanted to do,” Drew said sadly.

Swallowing the huge lump in her throat, Brix willed herself not to cry. She couldn’t cry. He didn’t deserve any more of her tears. She wasted almost a year of crying over him and she vowed to never shed another tear. It wasn’t like she was in the wrong here. For him to say he wanted to protect her heart, had to be a joke. He knew her heart belonged to him, far before he left. He had taken that muthafucka with him and never planned to return it. Brix had to build her a new one. A cold heart. It was what Drew forced her to do.

“You’re a liar,” she said with a chuckle.

“What?”

“You heard me. You’re a liar. You don’t leave the heart you were so called protecting without even giving it a notice. I mean, damn. Do you not even give a fuck about how I was going to feel? You knew my d—,” she stopped to take a deep breath. “You knew my daddy had just been killed and you up and leave. I fucking needed you and you left me. I will never forgive you for that, ever.”

A lone tear fell from her eye and she quickly brushed it away. The mention of her daddy didn’t always make her cry, but her emotions were on ten today. She hated to admit it, but she needed Drew at that tragic time in her life. Sure, she had her friends and family to support her, but the only other man she loved besides her daddy was supposed to help mend her broken heart. All he did was rip it into pieces, shove them in his pocket and chuck the deuces. For the life of her, she couldn’t understand why. Why did he just up and leave like their love meant nothing at all.

Rubbing his hand over his face, Drew knew he had to come clean. Seeing her in this much pain was slowly tearing him apart. The speech he had rehearsed repeatedly, somehow left his mind the minute she walked through the door. That was a sign letting him know that he needed to reveal the truth from the heart, no matter how hard it was going to be. Clearing his throat, he sat up straight in his chair and rubbed his neck. He didn’t know how much anger Brix had built up inside of her and he was shitting bricks thinking of how she was going to react.
