Seducing Her Brother's Best Friend(14)
Kane shook his head and ran his hand through his hair. “It isn’t like that. I know Cayla is too good for me, and I tried to stay away, but I love her. I fucking love her, Andre.”
Andre’s face turned a nasty shade of red, and he took a menacing step toward Kane. Oh, there would be fists thrown tonight, that was a guarantee. It was just a matter of how long the fight would last, and how hard Andre would hit him.
“You’re too old for her, Kane, and far too experienced.” Andre’s jaw clenched, and Kane heard his teeth grinding. “I don’t want to even think about what you are doing to her.” He turned away, gripped the dark hair at the base of his neck and pulled on the strands.
“We don’t care about the age thing, and I would never let anything or anyone hurt her. You have to know I’ll protect her at all costs.”
Whatever it was Kane said had that thin string inside of Andre snapping. He turned and charged after Kane. The momentum had Kane slamming into the wall with Andre like a fucking brick wall in front of him. The first punch came from his left, then the second from his right. He tried to block them, but he knew as a witness and from experience that Andre had a mean uppercut, and if he didn’t defuse the situation he would probably end up with a broken jaw.
“You fucking asshole. I trusted you.” Andre hit him again, and again, until Kane tasted blood and felt his eye starting to swell. He deserved his best friend’s wrath, because if the roles were reversed he would be kicking the shit out of the other guy, too. “I trusted you, Kane.” They fell to the floor with Andre on top of him. Knowing this had to stop, he pushed Andre off and moved to the side right before he got punched in the balls.
“Stop.” Kane held up his hand and wiped the side his mouth with his forearm. The tangy flavor of blood filled his mouth. “I deserved everything you gave me—”
“You deserve a lot fucking more.”
“True enough, but there is nothing you can do that will make me love Cayla any less, or keep me away from her.” For several long minutes they stared at each other. “You know me, know that I would never hurt her. I watched over her when she was younger, made sure she was safe and that no one fucked with her.”
Andre’s chest rose and fell with less exertion, and Kane had hope that his words were sinking in.
“Nothing happened between us until a few weeks ago, I swear to fucking God, man. I never even thought of her that way until then. I don’t know. Something just changed inside of me, man, and all I wanted was her.”
Andre stared at him for a few more minutes then exhaled loudly.
“This is royally fucked up.” He sat on the couch and hung his head. “Like totally fucking fucked up.”
Kane didn’t know how to respond, so instead of saying something that would further piss Andre off and break the calm that had suddenly taken over him, he stayed quiet. Slowly Andre looked over at him.
“You really love her?” The words were spoken slowly and quietly, and all Kane could do was swallow and nod.
“Yeah, Andre, I really do.”
“Fuck, Kane.” Andre stood, looked him over a few times, and shook his head. “You aren’t going to back off?”
“No, I’m not. I love her, and I mean that.”
Andre nodded and sighed heavily. “If you fucking hurt her I’ll beat your ass so bad you won’t come out of it.” Andre pointed his finger at his chest, then after a silent moment said, “Now get the fuck out so I can deal with my best friend dating my little sister alone.”
There was not much heat in Andre’s voice, and although Kane knew Andre was still pissed, his friend gave him a small smile. Maybe things might be okay after all?
Chapter Five
Two months later
Cayla dropped another box on the floor by her bed. She hadn’t realized how much crap she had until it was all packed away and she was hauling it with her to college. And this wasn’t even all her shit. Sitting on the bare mattress she looked around the small, square dorm that would be her home for the foreseeable future. She didn’t have a roommate, which of course was a plus and a curse all at the same time. She wouldn’t have the company one would provide, but she would get a lot of peace and quiet. A set of heavy boots and thick jean-encased legs stepped into the doorway. The big box in front of his body was nearly the size of him, and Cayla couldn’t help but laugh. Kane set the oversized box on the ground and flexed his hands. He scowled over at her.
“You think that’s funny, baby girl?”
Cayla schooled her features and knew it was a miserable attempt by the wicked grin he gave her. She held up her hands, trying to ward him off, but she knew it was in vain.
