Second-Chance Seduction(34)

By:Kate Carlisle

She hesitated a moment, then nodded. “Yes, all right.”

They settled at their respective ends of the comfortable sofa. Maggie seemed a bit shy again, now that she didn’t have the safe barrier of plates and food between them. But Connor kept the conversation light and she eased back into it.

Every time Connor thought about what Maggie had told him about her ex-husband, he felt more and more bemused. She hadn’t been living the high life as he’d always assumed, and now he didn’t know what to think. Really, though, how bad could it have been? The guy was worth millions. Should Connor feel badly for Maggie because the guy she ended up marrying turned out to be kind of a jerk?

After twenty minutes of safe conversation centered mostly on goats, beer, Angus and Deidre, Connor’s mom, Maggie yawned. “It’s been a long day and tomorrow will be a busy one. I think I’d better go to bed.”

She stood and reached her arms up in a stretch that caused her shirt to tighten dangerously across her perfect breasts. Connor had to look away or beg for mercy.

After a minute, she relaxed, picked up her teacup and took it over to the dining table. Connor followed her, but before he could say anything or make a move, Maggie turned and stopped him with a firm hand against his chest.

“You got your way, Connor,” she said. “I’m staying in the suite with you. Dinner was lovely, thank you, but I’m not going to sleep with you, so don’t bother trying to make me.”

                “Make you?”

“That’s right, don’t try to talk me into anything.” She folded her arms under her chest in a stubborn move that only accented her luscious breasts. “I’m not going to change my mind.”

He held up both hands innocently. “I never expected you to.”

                “Yes, you did.”

“No, Maggie. You’re the one who keeps bringing it up.”

                “What? Me? No, I—”

                “And frankly, I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. “You…don’t think what’s a good idea?”

“Sex,” he said easily, though he was cringing on the inside. “Look, we had a nice evening, but as you said, tomorrow’s going to be another long day, so I think we should call it a night.”

                She frowned. “You do.”

“Yes, I do.” He nodded calmly, mentally patting himself on the back for putting on this show of levelheadedness. “Look, you said it would be wrong and I’m agreeing with you.”

“You’re…agreeing with me. Okay. Good.” It took her a moment, but finally she gave him a tentative smile. “Well, then, good night. Thank you again for a lovely evening.”

He glanced down at her hand still pressed against his chest. “Good night, Mary Margaret.”

“Oh.” She whipped her hand away. “Okay, good night.”

“Wait.” With an innocent smile, he reached out and took hold of her arms. “I’ll sleep better if I can have a good-night kiss. Just one. For old times’ sake.”

She gave him a look. “Oh, all right.” Then she seemed to brace herself as she puckered up for a chaste kiss.
