The orgasm was so intense, I felt like I was floating, having an outer body experience as I came down from the high of the release.
Strong arms lifted me before placing me on the bed as a warm body covered mine.
My eyes grew heavy when a deep chuckle sounded in my ear.
“How was that?” Brett asked, pushing his hips between my legs.
I ran my hands down his back, scratching my nails into his skin. “Best. Orgasm. Ever.”
“Good.” His tongue licked up the side of my neck before delving into my mouth.
I swallowed the sweet taste of my juices mixed with the saltiness of his previous release and lifted my hips as he lowered into me.
His movements were slow but deep.
I moaned, my muscles jumping, my core pulsing. A tingle spread through my center and I whimpered.
“That’s it. I want you with me,” he breathed against my mouth.
My nails dug into the hard muscles of his back as we came together. We swallowed each other’s sounds of ecstasy as our bodies moved as one.
I sighed in bliss, running my hands down his sweat slicked back.
He chuckled and placed a hard kiss on my lips before releasing me completely.
I watched as he rose from the bed and righted his pants.
He pulled me into his arms, wrapping the blanket around me and placed his laptop on my lap. “I want to show you what I’ve been working on.”
A couple of clicks later, an advertisement popped up on the screen.

My breath caught in my throat and I looked up at him before glancing back at the screen.
He smiled lightly.
“Anything I can do to help?” I asked, pulling the blanket tighter around us.
“Just you being there beside me is all the help I need,” he said, shutting his lap top closed. His eyes took on a faraway look.
My heart hurt, wishing I could take away his pain. My mom had died from cancer. Natural causes. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what he and his sister had gone through. Having both of your parents die due to a drunk driver hitting them was something you could never get over.
“Are you okay?” I asked, cupping his cheek.
“Yeah,” he answered, his voice thick as he placed the computer back on the nightstand.
Tears burned my eyes.
“Hey, Evvie, don’t.” He kissed me on the nose. “You’ve cried enough over me.”
I shook my head. “This is different.”
“Stop. I can’t deal. Even though it was years ago, it still…” he swallowed. “It fucking hurts.”
With a shaky breath, I wrapped my arms around his neck, holding him. Pouring the love I felt for this man into my touch.
“Thank you,” he whispered.
I leaned back. “For what?”
“For being you. For not leaving even though I can be a dick.”
“I love you,” I said, cupping his face in my hands. “I’m sure I’m not the easiest person to get along with either.”
He scoffed. “Evvie, you are perfect.”
I laughed. “I’m many things but perfect is not one of them.”
Brett’s eyebrows narrowed as he grabbed my wrists. “You are perfect for me. You’re still here even after all the shit I’ve put you through.”
My stomach clenched. “I love you. We both make mistakes. You thought you were looking out for me but realized that you needed me more.”
“I couldn’t deal with any of this without you. I’m…I’m not strong enough,” he mumbled and looked away.
I sighed and brushed a thumb over his bottom lip. I didn’t know how to make him see reason. How to make him not be so hard on himself. Maybe there was something wrong with me that I still stuck around but I loved him. It was all consuming, all powerful, like he told me when we first started seeing each other. “I’m not leaving you, Brett.”
He nodded slightly. “I know.” He took a breath. “I know that.”
Did he? “No matter what. This?” I motioned between us. “Is strong. Permanent.”
He looked away, his jaw clenching.
“Brett,” I demanded.
His eyes twinkled as he met my gaze.
“Don’t look at me like that.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Like what?”
I kissed him hard. “With doubt in your eyes.”
He laid us down, pulled off his pants and wrapped his arms around me. Bringing the blanket up and around us, he held me tight, pressing his body against mine. “It would destroy me if you left me,” he whispered into my hair.
“Stop. I’m here. I’m always here. I’m not leaving.” I grabbed his hand, pulling him tighter around me. I would crawl under his skin if I could. Curling up into a little ball in the corner of his warmth. He was my safe place. My forever. My one. My only.
