Raging Kane(19)

Chapter Eleven

We locked up the house and drove to Evelyn’s. Caro tried to call her several times but got no answer. Panic was setting in fast for both of us.

I called Gage to check on my family and Redding.

“Hey, what’s up, Casanova?”

“Now’s not the time. Dan and Dana, the Danks twins, tried to kidnap and maybe even kill Carolyn.”

“Shit man, is she okay?”

“As good as can be expected. We’re on our way to get her sister. Have you seen or heard from Overton?”

“Maxwell Overton? No. Why? Do you think Arabella’s in danger?” Gage sounded pissed.

“I want you to watch her like a hawk.”

“Yeah, I’ve got that covered.”

“I know, but I wanted you to have someone you trust keep an eye on my family.”

“Hunter’s visiting with Creed today so I’ll let him know. Just stay safe.”

“I will. I’ve got the world to live for.” I wrapped my hand tighter in hers, giving her a sense of security. I could feel her tension so strongly.

“Keep me informed,” Gage said before hanging up.

“Caro, I know that you’re scared, confused, and worried, but I’m going to do all I can to make you feel safe and happy again.”

“What about Evelyn? We have to make sure she’s safe,” she cried.

“We’ll get to her. We’re almost there.”

“Thank you, Kane.”

“For what? I brought this to you.”

“Fate brought this on. Whatever is happening, we’ll make it work.” She kissed my hand. The fear of her leaving me fled my body.

We were a few miles away from her building when her sister finally called us and Carolyn hit the speaker on it. “Evelyn, get ready, we’re coming for you then going back to Wolfe Creek. We’ll explain everything when Kane and I get there.”

“No, you nor your mate will be coming for her. I’ve got this lovely starlet here looking so unbelievably scrumptious. I wonder if she tastes as good as she looks.”

Carolyn gasped, tears streaming down her eyes. She didn’t know who this man was, but she knew her sister was in danger. “Overton. Your problem is with me, not her.”

“You see. Since you ruined my plan to destroy your pack and make my money hand over fist with my drugs, I needed a way to repay you for my exile. Those two halfwits couldn’t even kidnap your mate correctly. Now, I have her sister.”

I pleaded with him. “We can work something out.”

“No, we can’t. You’ve caused a serious problem for me. You made me an outcast. I wanted you to die, but I wanted to kill your mate myself. That’s what I get for sending lackeys to do something I should have done myself. I wonder…will your mate hate you if I rip her sister’s heart out and eat it? I bet she would, and then you’d die slowly from her rejection. Yes, that sounds like a plan.”

“No!” I heard in the background, but it wasn’t from Evelyn. It was a deep resonating voice, and I heard the distinct sound of shifting.

I was about to shout into the phone pleading for her safety when I heard a loud crash and a snarl. Evelyn screamed and I thought he’d followed through with his threat.

Carolyn sobbed horribly, but then I could hear two snarls and tearing of flesh.

The line went dead.

We got there faster than I expected. Once we got to the building, the doorman was waiting to escort me to the back entrance.

“She’s alive,” he whispered.

We rushed up the stairs to her floor. Using her key, we entered and saw something we shouldn’t have. I had my hands on Caro’s eyes and we walked out the door.

Evelyn and some shifter were mating. I could smell his need. He was a wolf as well, but I’d never seen him before.

Chapter Twelve

We took the elevator back down and were greeted by the same doorman. “Miss Denney, Mr. Holt. Please come this way.”

He escorted us down to the manager’s office and closed and locked the door.

In a whisper, he said, “The body was moved out of town and into a wild area full of regular wolves.”

I thought he smelled different but was just in too much of a hurry to notice. He wasn’t human. “What are you?”

“Let’s just say I’m different than the humans and yourself. The boss has taken a liking to Evelyn and she’s his now. Don’t ever worry about her. He wouldn’t do anything to harm her, and no one would be stupid enough to test him.”

“He looks familiar. Is he an actor, too?”

“Yes, he is. He’s English and usually performs on the stage instead of in front of the cameras. Normally, he doesn’t watch the news, but your antics caught his attention. The moment her image came up on the screen, he wanted to tear you to shreds. He needed to meet her and make her his.” I held onto Carolyn like I might have to fight this jackass for her. I knew what he was; I had smelled the stench before. They weren’t our enemies, but they were like wild animals. They couldn’t be trusted and would say the same about us.
