“We didn’t use a condom! I always use a condom. I’m not on any birth control Wyatt!” she shrieked.
“Jinger, calm down. There isn’t anything we can do about it now. And so what if you get pregnant. I’m not going anywhere. Besides my mom would be thrilled,” he said laying back down with a laugh.
Jinger didn’t want to be calm. She’d let her desire for Wyatt cloud her judgment and all of a sudden she felt very foolish. And Wyatt’s casual response to such an epic fuck up only made her feel worse. She needed to leave and hide and reevaluate her life choices.
“Wyatt, could you please take me back to my car? I’d like to go home.”
“What? Why? Jinger did I do something wrong?” Wyatt sputtered sitting up and leaning over her, pinning her to the bed.
“No, everything was great. It’s just time for me to go home,” she couldn’t keep the tinge of regret out of her voice and she knew Wyatt heard it.
Running his hand through his hair, Wyatt tried to figure out how things had changed so fast. He was laying there in bliss. His mate wrapped in his arms. The best sex he’d ever had. Even his damn bear was contentedly chuffing.
“Jinger, talk to me. Why do you want to leave? Is it something I said? Something I did?”
“No, it’s not you. I’m feeling...” Gawd, she didn’t want to admit it. Freaking out about a possible pregnancy was the best way to throw a bucket of ice cold water on what was a very steamy interlude. Something also told her, she might hurt his feelings telling him the truth.
“I had a great time, Wyatt. Really, but I’m a little overwhelmed and feeling a little self-conscious at the moment. I’d feel better if I got home tonight and we could plan a date later.”
She really hoped he accepted her excuse and she could get back home and beat herself up in private for her stupidity. She could only imagine what her mother would say if her normally level-headed daughter admitted hopping into the sack with a man she met the day before and having hot steamy sex with him without protection. She’d leave the hot steamy part out, but the point still stands.
“Are you giving me the brush off,” he asked a little angrily.
“NO! Really, Wyatt, I have to work tomorrow and I’ll need to change and I don’t want to get up early to do that. I’m not a morning person,” she tried with a little laugh.
Wyatt looked at her and although his expression never showed he believed her, he finally sighed, “Sure, I guess. I’ll drive you back to your car.”
Seeing him start to get up, Jinger realized she had a very uncomfortable car ride ahead of her. “Hey um, do you think I might borrow your truck? That way I can head straight home and maybe you could get one of your brothers to bring you by my work for your truck? That way you don’t have to drive out of the way to my office. I’ll get home sooner this way.”
Wyatt thought for a minute that he didn’t want her leaving at night by herself, but she’d be driving in the dark with her car anyway. At least this way there was a guarantee he’d see her tomorrow picking up his truck. Maybe she wasn’t brushing him off.
“As long as you promise I get to see you tomorrow. Maybe you could come by the camp to have lunch? Then I’ll drive you back to work,” he offered.
Relief washed over her, hopefully by tomorrow she’d have her head on straight. “Of course, I’ll take Sophie’s cooking over microwave meals any day,” she said with a smile.
Wyatt leaned over and cupped her face and brought his lips to hers. Jinger kissed him back, hoping she was showing him she was still interested. Just a little freaked out.
“Okay, gingersnap, let’s get dressed.”
Wyatt walked Jinger out to his truck and opened the door and helped her climb in.
“I’m guessing you know all the basics, nothing tricky here. It’s taller than your car, so take any turns carefully you hear me,” he said. His bear was very displeased that he was letting her go off in the dark. But the man knew, she was a grown woman that was capable of taking care of herself. He wasn’t going to go all caveman on her.
“I think I can handle it. Thank you for a wonderful evening,” she said, not quite sure how to say goodbye. There was an awkward silence as she waited for Wyatt to say something.
Wyatt put his foot on the step and heaved himself up so he was face to face with her in the seat. “Jinger, this will get easier. Give us time. Tonight was more than wonderful. It was perfect, and I want to have many more nights like this with you,” he said kissing her softly.
“Okay, Wyatt,” she replied. She wanted say something to him, but she wasn’t sure what.
