One Chance (Part 1)(76)

By:T. Renee Fike.

As I sit and think about last night, it dawns on me, “Son of a bitch.”

“What’s wrong?” Quinn asks as she walks through the door.

“Nothing,” I say quickly.

“Nice try, what happened?” she says with a stern look.

“I slept with Liam last night as farewell sex.”

“Farewell sex?” she says with a confused look.

“Yes.”

“Okay, so what about it?”

“Afterward when we were falling asleep, I think I said I love you.”

“You think or you did?” she asks with a surprised look.

“I’m not sure, but I think I did. Then I wake up this morning and he’s already gone.”

“Damn,” she says laughing.

“What’s so funny?”

“Well, at least he knows then.”

“He didn’t need to know that though,” I say as I flop back on my bed wishing I could rewind the past eight hours.

“Well now that you probably said it, let’s see what happens.”

“I’m going to act like I never said it.”

“I figured as much. Did he say anything after you said it?”

“I don’t think so, I passed out.”

“Aww, so he could have pledged his undying love to you and you missed it,” she says jokingly.

“I doubt that, if he did, he wouldn’t have left and he wouldn’t be trying to date someone. God, I’m such an idiot.”

“I wouldn’t worry about it. If it matters, you will know soon enough.”

“You’re right.”

The day is spent finishing up some last minute homework before Kenzie and Brody come over to hang out before the game.

“Are you sure you’re going to be warm enough in that?” I ask Kenzie for the third time. She doesn’t have near enough layers on for how cold it is outside.

“I’ll be fine,” she snaps.

“Hey, you guys almost ready?” Quinn asks.

“Yep.”

“Have you heard from Liam?” Quinn asks with a look.

“No why?”

“Just curious.”

“Why, what’s going on?” Brody asks kindly.

“Nothing, everything’s good,” I state, though I have no idea.

“Okay good. Well then let’s go,” Quinn says excitedly.

We head to the game with our crew and get situated for a long night of football. The game ends up going into overtime and we lose by a field goal. It sucks; Liam definitely didn’t play as well as he normally does.

“I can’t believe we freaking lost,” Quinn complains.

“Yeah, Liam’s head was not in the game,” Kenzie states.

“He can’t do it all on his own,” Brody argues.

“No, you’re right, but you could tell something was off,” Rebecca says, “He definitely wasn’t playing like he usually does.”

“He just had a bad game, it happens. Where do you guys want to go to tonight?” I ask trying to change the subject.

“Oh, let’s go to Alpha Chi,” Quinn says excitedly.

“Yes, that’s a great idea,” Rebecca cheers.

“Okay then, Alpha Chi it is,” I say happily. We head back to the house to change before heading to the party.

The place is packed as we enter the house. Quinn sees Mark and heads in his direction, while Rebecca rushes off to meet Rob. Kenzie, Brody, and I head towards the drinks. After about an hour, the house is only getting busier. There’s hardly any room to move in.

“Hey babe, when’s Liam coming?” Kenz asks Brody.

“Not sure, he said he’d be here though.”

“Good, because we aren’t going to have time to see him tomorrow before we leave,” Kenz says happily.

“I know babe.”

“What time are you guys’ planning on leaving tomorrow?” I ask.

“Around 8 or 9 a.m.,” Brody says.

“Okay,” I say before taking another sip of my beer.

About twenty minutes later, Liam walks in with a few of his teammates. He looks pissed, but that’s probably because they lost.

“I’ll be right back,” Brody says before heading off towards Liam.

“How are you holding up?” Kenz asks.

“I’m good,” I say, and then show a fake smile.

“You do realize I know you better than anyone right,” she says intently.

“Yeah.”

“Then don’t lie to me. I know how you feel about him, so tell me the truth, how are you really holding up?”

“I’m okay. It sucks, but I knew it was going to happen sooner or later.”

“How did you know that?” she asks looking confused.

“Because, it’s not like Liam and I would ever date.”
