My Son(48)

By:Marie Kelly

Marc had stood watching her run back to the house, her blonde hair flowing behind her as she fled. He didn’t follow her- there seemed little point, she had been very vocal in her feelings towards him. She didn’t want him, she wanted Philip. Marc’s mouth had tightened solemnly. Well that would have to change he decided, because he wanted her, and not even Philip was going to stop him getting what he wanted.

The next day being Monday had seen a return to some semblance of normality. When she had entered the kitchen Beth was once again standing there smiling cheerily at her

“Well, how was the party” she had asked brightly

“Did the world fall apart because you wore the sexy dress?”

Kelly had given a small laugh, remembering just how badly the world had indeed fallen apart.

“How was your day off” she had asked back seeing the big smile spread over Beth’s face

“Fantastic, stayed in bed the whole day and ordered carry out”

Kelly had laughed shaking her head.

“Wow…. You really know how to push out the boat”

“Did you and Marc do anything on Sunday” Beth had asked her voice innocent as she had watched the younger woman

For a second Kelly thought she had seen a particular glint in her eyes, but her dismissive shrug of the shoulder and

“No Marc took Max out; I had to catch up with some work”

had resulted in the older woman looking almost disappointed as she had made a small snorting noise.

“Oh….. and you talk about me”

As they had sat down for breakfast Kelly had found that she was hungry, realising that she had eaten nothing at all the previous day. Moving her hand over her temple Kelly had felt the throbbing of her sore head. Despite the fact that she had fallen instantly asleep the previous night, it had not been refreshing, but one full of nightmares from which she seemed to be unable to wake from.

“Are you OK” Beth had asked softly noticing how pale she looked

“I’m fine thanks” she had answered with a weak smile

“Bit of a headache. I’ll take Max out for a walk the air will do me good”

That was exactly what Kelly had done and for the next couple of hours she had walked around the villa grounds with Max contentedly chattering in his buggy. The air had helped and by the time she returned to the villa she had felt much better. She was met by a beaming Beth who had dragged her into the main living room to see the huge bouquet of flowers which sat on the coffee table

“These arrived for you 10 minutes ago” the woman had said hovering excitedly.

“Who are they from?”

“Give me a moment” Kelly had laughed, pulling the card from the centre of the flowers surprised to see a handwritten note from Philip

Thank you

I really am the happiest man alive

I’ll be back from London next week, when we can come clean

See you very soon, can’t wait to let everybody know our little secret, starting with Marc

Love Philip

“They’re from Philip” she had said smiling softly

“That’s so sweet”

Beth however, was frowning slightly

“Philip? ….. Oh, I... I’ll get you some vases for those”

From the hallway a sudden wailing could be heard as Max having been left in his buggy all that time had decided that he had been patient long enough and resorted to crying for his freedom.

Kelly had sighed dropping the envelope before rushing through to get him, quickly unbuckling the small boy before he really started to scream the place down, laughing as she had lifted him

“You really are a De Santo…” she chuckled adding with a sigh “beating all the other little kids to those terrible twos”

Max had struggled against her, determination in his face as his little body had become rigid, arching his back to get down, and setting him on the ground she had to run after him as he had sped across the hallway on his knees

“Come back here young man” she cried as the large door had opened and Marc had entered.

Kelly’s heart had dropped to the pit of her stomach as she had frozen to the spot, her eyes staring hauntingly at him.

Marc however had grabbed Max who had seen an opportunity to escape outside and was trying to make good his bid for freedom

“Oh no you don’t young man” he had laughed at the little boy

“Your mummy said no” before he had looked down at her, his eyes soft with no hardness in them at all.

Kelly had stared back, a surprised yet wary look on her face.

“Th..thanks” she stammered

As she had taken Max from him he had gently placed his hands on her shoulder, feeling her body stiffen in response

“Kelly can we talk”

“Marc…” she began
