My Son(46)
With that she had lowered her eyes again so that he would not see how much it had hurt her to say those words
The effect on Marc was instant. He stood stock still in shock for a few seconds before turning wordlessly on his heels and marching out of the room. She heard him moving back down the stairs and after a minute the sound of the front door slamming shut.
Only when he had gone did she look up and then the tears had fallen from her eyes silently, as her heart broke into a thousand pieces. Finally she understood why she couldn’t be his mistress, why she could not allow herself to be seduced, although her body cried out for him. She was in love with Marc, totally and completely in love with him, the father of her beloved Max and a man who would only ever see her as a temporary dalliance.
Kelly had gently placed Max back in his cot before entering her own room through the connecting doors. Only when she was safely curled up tightly in a ball on the giant bed did she finally allow the sobs to totally take over, wracking her small body with such intensity as her broken heart yearned for that which it could never have.
CHAPTER TEN
Kelly had not slept for the rest of the night. Lying awake she had waited to hear the sound of Marc’s car returning, but he never did. Finally as the sun had broken, she had arisen and moved to the shower, her mind replaying the way his hands had touched her and his mouth had kissed her as she washed, moaning miserably as the water had trickled so sensually down her, feeling as her tears had mixed with the luke warm water.
Going downstairs she had made herself a cup of tea, remembering that Beth would not be there that day, her tortured mind wondered where Marc was. Had he gone to see Olivia Prentiss, who had made it more than clear at the party that they were more than friends, frowning at the thought as a hot shooting pain had gripped her stomach. She had no right to be jealous she thought to herself, after all she had rejected him in the cruellest way possible.
As she had sat replaying the events of the previous night for what seemed the millionth time, she heard the door open and instantly froze, knowing that it could be only one person. Kelly softly prayed that he would go straight up to his room, but his footsteps on the tiles as he entered the large kitchen ended that hope. Throwing his keys on the surface she had thought how tired he looked. As he finally looked up and saw her sitting at the table nursing a large mug, his expression had instantly turned stony.
“Well, well if it isn’t our resident little tease”
He said with a cruel sneer in his voice, as he lent against the door frame
Kelly had flinched but remained silent.
“What nothing to say? “
She had lowered her eyes and shaken her head, and from the other side of the room she had heard his sharp intake of breath.
“Damn you Kelly” he said his voice low and husky
She could sense that he had straightened up and taken a step towards her, before changing his mind and leaving the room moving quickly up the stairs.
Kelly put her head into her hands and cried, she had thought that she would have no more tears left, but still they came stinging her already tired and burning eyes.
For the rest of the day Marc had actively avoided Kelly ignoring her whenever they had to be in the same room. He had taken the day off to spend with Max, but frowned whenever she was around and with her heart breaking a little more each time he looked at her with his barely concealed contempt, she had finally made an excuse that she had work to do, letting him spend the time with his son without her unwanted presence. In her room she had paced up and down wondering what to do, it was clear that they couldn’t go on like this, couldn’t live with his seething anger and contempt.
She had left Marc to get Max ready for bed, letting him carry out the usual bed and bath time routine, while she sat listening on her monitor to the sound of a happy Marc. When she closed her eyes visions of him admiring her body telling her how beautiful she was would leap to her mind, visions to torture her already fragile heart. When he finally left Max in his cot, saying goodnight gently to the small boy, she had waited until Max’s soft cooing had been replaced by the gently rhythmic sounds of his sleeping breath, before creeping in to gaze down on his sweet little face. Leaning in she had given him a small kiss, which had not even caused him to stir
“Goodnight sweetie” she whispered “I love you”
In his room Marc had heard her on his monitor and throwing the book away from him, suddenly felt the need for exercise.
Kelly listened at the hallway, having been trapped in her room for most of the day she wanted to walk, to feel the sun and wind on her body. However, she didn’t want to unexpectedly bump into Marc, and once more face his contempt. Gently and stealthily she had moved down the stairs and slipped out of the front door without meeting anybody on the way. Taking a sigh of relief she had started to walk away from the house, her monitor tucked safely inside her pocket, as with no real direction in mind she had aimlessly began to walk towards the corner which would best shield her from view of anybody watching from the house.
