Just a Number(138)

By:A.D. Ryan

Owen kisses me again, and I start to giggle uncontrollably. He pulls away, eyebrows arched with confusion. “You realize you just asked me to marry you while still inside me, right?”

Owen’s eyes light up with his smile, and he shrugs. “Well, I don’t have the ring on me tonight, so I figured I had to do something special.” I cover my mouth to contain the loud laugh that tries to escape. “Besides, I’ve done the traditional proposal before. I figured I’d switch it up this time and see if I got better results.”

“And?”

“Well, I can’t be completely sure yet, but I’m still inside you and you said yes, so I’m going to assume these are all positive signs.”

I kiss Owen again as he withdraws from between my legs and lowers me to the floor. He’s running his hands through his hair while I readjust my thong and dress, and I figure now is as good a time as any to tell him what I’ve been keeping from him these last few days.

“So,” I begin, nervous butterflies flapping in my belly. “Did you have a particular timeframe in mind for this wedding?”

Owen shrugs. “Not really.”

I smirk, standing up straight and placing a hand over my lower belly. “Well, not that there’s any rush, because our relationship has never really followed a specific set of rules, but how would some time within the next nine months sound?”

Owen eyes me curiously, eyebrows pulled together as he tries to decipher the expression on my face. His gaze shifts down to where my hand rests, and his blue eyes widen before snapping to mine. “You mean…?”

I nod once, biting the inside of my cheek to contain a squeal. “I do. I found out a couple days ago, but wanted to find the right moment to tell you.”

Owen rushes toward me and whisks me off the ground, peppering my face with kisses until his lips find mine, and we share a long, celebratory kiss before he asks, “How? You’re on the pill.”

I’m not exactly proud of how this happened, but I’m a firm believer in things happening for a reason and when they’re supposed to. “I think it was that impromptu weekend getaway we took. You picked me up after packing our things. I didn’t have my pills on me, but I thought I could maybe play catch-up when we got back. Apparently I was wrong. Are you mad?”

His initial reaction had seemed positive, but I didn’t want him to think I was trying to trap him into anything. He’s wanted kids for a while, but we’d always agreed to discuss it before allowing it to happen.

His smile only widens. “Of course I’m not mad,” he assures me. “Sweetheart, this is the best news.” He kisses me again, his lips lingering instead of persisting. “Thank you.”

We celebrate our engagement and pregnancy in silence for a few more minutes before we remember where we are and why.

After slipping out of the coat closet, I excuse myself to use the washroom while he waits for me, and then we head back to the wedding. Just inside the doors to the hall, Owen looks down at me with a smile and sweeps me back out onto the dance floor for another dance. This time our happiness is fuelled by our little secret…

A secret that we won’t keep from everyone for too long this time.
