Grady (The McCade Dragon #3)(5)
She has finally put the torque on her arm, my lord. And now, not only am I able to talk to her, I can tell that she is carrying a son. Grady said nothing. He wasn't sure what he could have said at this point. I should like for you to go to your car, sir, and find her. As I learn where she is, I'll let you know. But please head north. She is safe for now, but I fear that she will not be for very long. There are others after her besides the dragon slayers.
"All right."
He started out of his room only to return to get some of the blankets that had been put in the chest at the bottom of his bed. He called to Kenton, telling him what he'd just found out.
I'm gathering my bag up now. Caelin just let me know that you might need me. Grady was out the door and into his car before he realized that he needed to slow down, take a few breaths. Mom is on her way to your house. She said she'd get things ready.
Grady had no idea what that meant, but sat there for a few more minutes before he thought he could drive. His mate was coming to him, and she was pregnant. He took some time to empty his mind and breathe then started the car. As he made his way to Kenton's house, he knew that he was being overly careful. He was freaking the fuck out right now, and wasn't going to have an accident before he got to her.
Kenton opened the driver's side door as soon as he got there. Grady gladly slid over to allow him to drive.
You need to head to a place called Middletown. Kenton said that he knew where that was. She is staying in the Economy Lodge along the highway. I do not know her room number, I'm sorry, but she needs you to be there soon. As I said, she is well for now, but harmed. I fear that someone else will come for her if she does not have help.
"We're two and a half hours away, Caelin. Do you think she will she need us sooner?" Caelin said that she did not, but soon. "Is she in labor? Do I need to call an ambulance?"
Nay, she has been hurt otherwise, a cut, but you can fix that easily enough. I cannot tell as yet how. The child is well, as is she, but there are wounds to her body that need to be cared for. Grady asked him how he knew she was hurting. Because she told me so. I can see into her mind now. Let me look.
While they waited, Grady looked at Kenton and then the speedometer. When he asked him if he wanted them all dead, he felt the car slow. He figured he'd get them there sooner at ninety-six, but not safely. Kenton stretched his neck before speaking.
"I'm nervous." Grady said he was as well. "She's your mate, I know that, but what do you think of her having another man's child?"
"Should I think of that?" To be honest, Grady hadn't let that part sink in yet. A baby? He had no idea, but he'd seen Jorden with his son and figured it wasn't that big of a deal. "I don't know a thing about her or the child. For all I know she was raped and got pregnant that way. Or perhaps she's a widow. I don't know what to think. Or even if I should."
"I never thought of it that way. I should have. I see it a lot. I just never expected a woman, one of our mates, to come to us in that way. It's all right, but just unexpected." Grady looked out the front window as things raced by them going in the opposite direction. "Whatever happens, we'll be here for you."
"I know that."
Grady let his mind wander. He wasn't entirely sure what he was supposed to do with a child. He had been thinking of his mate and her coming forever, even before the dragon told him about her, and he had this fairy tale vision of the way things would go. He was pretty sure, after hearing Caelin talk about her, that he was going to have to revisit his thoughts. She was going to be a hellion, he knew it. Frowning, Grady thought this might be harder than he had imagined it would be. But regardless, he was going to make it work for them both.

Harper tried her best not to bleed on the bed. She'd wrapped a wet towel around her arm, but it wasn't doing much. She looked at the coverlet and decided that the blood couldn't make it any worse. It was the ugliest thing she'd ever seen, even for a cheap hotel room. Looking around at the broken dresser, she wondered who the fuck was going to pay for this. The man who had tried to force his way into her room was going to think twice about trying to take her on again. At least she hoped so. And that too freaked her out just a little, how he'd flown from the room like he'd been jerked by an unseen string.
Harper Bailey had been going for a few weeks now, even before she'd found the stupid bracelet-which wasn't a bracelet at all, she'd been told-and this.... Well, she wasn't sure she believed it was a dragon that spoke to her, but he said he was. But she only had to return it to the rightful owner and that would be the end of it. Or so she hoped. The dragon, it seemed, had more rules to follow.
