Grady (The McCade Dragon #3)(28)

By:Kathi S. Barton

"She's a bitch, in the event you might have missed that. And while you're checking her out, if she happened to deliver a baby that wasn't breathing, I'd not be overly distraught about that either."

Dalton looked at Jorden when the line was disconnected. "Do you suppose she has any idea that she's not only just talked to a cop, but has prearranged a murder as well as a kidnapping?" Dalton told Jorden he wouldn't think so. "Yeah, me either. Christ, this woman is seriously stupid if she thinks any of us would do something so horrific to our sister-in-law."

"I don't think she knows." Jorden asked him what he meant and he explained. "She thinks she got a doctor that might be caring for Harper. There aren't any more in this area, as you know, so she's assuming, and rightly so, that Kenton is her physician. Winnie thinks Kenton is going to help her, and she has no idea that we're all related."

"The wedding is tonight." Jorden looked at his cell phone. "In an hour. I came by to pick you up while Jasmine and Emma get Harper ready."

"Christ, that was it." Dalton told Jorden that he'd remembered that there was something, just not what it was. "I've been so overworked lately. I cannot wait for Howard to get back from vacation so I can be just a regular cop again. This being in charge shit is for the birds."

"But you do it so well, little brother." Dalton flipped him off. "Also, you should know that if this thing ever comes to a head, which I have no doubt it will, neither Winnie nor her husband are going to have shit. Mom has made a few calls."

"Christ, then they're as good as done." He was still standing there, trying to think what he'd been about to do, when Jorden reminded him he was going to the wedding. "I need a break, Jorden, and a long nap."

As he was getting dressed for the wedding, which was being held at his mom's house, he told Kenton what had transpired. Kenton was obviously pissed off, but also told him not to tell either Grady or Harper until after the wedding.

I think this sister is going to be as much trouble, if not more than, the dragon killers. Dalton agreed with him. Also, did you know that Kurt is in town? I thought he was here for the wedding, but he came to talk to Grady about another matter. The guy has had some rough times lately. I guess he's wanting to settle down and be a regular person. Try and come to terms with all that's happened to him lately.

I believe you might be right. I read about his brother last night on the computer. For as nice a guy as Kurt is, I can't believe what an ass his brother is. Kenton told him that he'd heard not an hour ago that David was dead. Well, I can't say that I'm surprised by it. But, no, I hadn't heard. What was it? Did he get killed in prison?

No, though I'm betting he had wished he had been. The council brought their judgment against him. And you know as well as I that they're swift with their punishment. I guess he was taken from his cell to the courthouse, and never made it. Dalton said that was the way he'd want to go, quick and done. I doubt it was quick, but it's done. I guess Kurt felt it.

I'll see what I can find out for him if he wants. That guy has had a really terrible year so far.

Kenton said he'd see him at Mom's just as Dalton and Jorden were getting into Jorden's truck. Dalton told him what was going on. As soon as they pulled into Mom's drive, he knew that something else had happened, and he had a feeling that it was the sister. The bitch hadn't waited until later.

Thankfully, it hadn't been that at all, just a slight mishap with the cake. Lewis had miscalculated the amount needed, and he and Emma had baked cupcakes to take up the slack. It was going to be one hell of a reception if those two were in charge of the food, Dalton thought.

Harper looked down at the white dress she had on without really seeing it. She was trying to think past the pain in her heart over what her sister had done to her. To think that they had the same blood, the same parents even, and were so very different. Harper looked up when someone said her name. It was Emma

"You okay?" Harper said she wasn't sure. "Yeah, I can understand that. She does know how to make someone simply want to run her through, don't you think? If I had a sister like her.... Hey, I had a brother like her. He wasn't as smart as your sister appears to be, but just as evil. Can I do anything for you?"

"No. I'm not sure this is such a good idea now. I mean, she said she was going to get all of us in trouble." Emma sat on the chair across from her, her belly just beginning to show a little, and Harper thought her adorable. "Grady should have someone that's normal."
