His gut told him they were beyond might have and had gone straight into fucked. If one hair on Dani’s head was touched…

“Go and take Stix with you on your way out. I’ll send someone else to the bridge.”

Creed didn’t wait for an engraved invitation, he sprinted to his bike and hoped on, barely taking time to don his helmet before he raced out of the parking lot.

Fear seized him.

This could not be happening.

Dani sat up in her hotel bed, staring at but not seeing what mindless program ran on the television. Her OB/GYN had come in with her test results and she was still stunned. It seemed despite the tragic night and her body’s previous rejection, something had changed. The baby was safe and viable.

God she hated that word. Viable. A shudder ran down her spine.

To use such a cold and unfeeling word when referring to the baby growing inside her made her heart break all over again.

It seemed those expensive weekly shots had paid off and her body wasn’t trying to reject the baby anymore.

For the first time in weeks, no make that months, she felt hope alive and well.

Now she needed to process everything happening so fast. Creed dragging her from a burning building had certainly sparked a chain of events that changed everything.

With the first thing being him finding out about the baby and being super pissed off about it. She still couldn’t tell for sure if he was okay with her having a baby or the fact his pride had taken a big hit was the real issue.

The door creaked open and a man she didn’t recognize in a set of blue scrubs entered her room, pushing a wheelchair. “Hi there,” he greeted, his eyes scanning her room. “I’m here to take you down to the lab to get your blood drawn.”

She frowned. “Why not just take it here?”

He shrugged. “Easier, I guess. I don’t make those calls, I just follow orders.”

“Okay.” Maybe a small change of scenery would make her feel better. In this tiny room the four walls seemed to be closing in on her the more she sat and worried about Creed and her future.

The man held out his hand to help her down and when she made contact another shiver worked down her body. It wasn’t a good feeling. Something seemed off. Of course she could just be paranoid. She’d been through a lot lately and her system had to still be in overload mode.

Still.

She wished Creed were here. Pissed or not, his presence had calmed her. Dani sighed. They really needed to talk. Her initial assessment of his big news had hit her at a hard time when her emotions were already heightened because of the baby. Sadness washed over her as she settled into the chair. All the weeks of dealing with everything alone had taken their toll.

When the lab tech rolled her out of the room the first thing she noticed was no sign of Creed or anyone at all from Devils Point. A new wave of loneliness engulfed her. The hair prickled at the back of her neck. For not the first time in the last several weeks she wished for the man who stole her heart during a one night stand and never gave it back.

Even if he did act like a bossy ass half the time.

She smiled, hope again filling her chest. Maybe if they talked they could work this out. The idea of shapeshifters still seemed foreign to her, but as well as she knew some of them maybe it wouldn’t be so scary anymore.

Watching Rebel fall and finally give into Dante hadn’t hurt either. Besides being one of the hottest guys she’d ever seen, he also turned furry at times. And that didn’t seem to bother Rebel one bit.

Of course Rebel wasn’t on this ridiculous emotional roller coaster. While her doctor assured her that such extreme highs and lows in her emotions could be perfectly normal, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about this situation felt normal.

Lost in thought, Dani didn’t realize they’d gotten on the elevator until the elevator doors swished open and the orderly pushed her into what looked like a deserted basement.

“Where are we?” she asked, fear prickling at the back of her mind. Her instincts were protesting again.

“Almost there,” he said.

“I want to go back to my room,” she demanded. Something was definitely not right.

“I’m afraid that’s not going to happen, Dani Jones.”

She swiveled her head until she could see the man in her peripheral vision. From this angle he no longer looked like an innocent orderly. No, between the hard, emotionless look in his eyes to the tattoo she couldn’t make out clearly he looked hard and unrelenting.

“I’m serious. You can tell the doctor I refused. I don’t want to mess up your job or anything, I just want to go back to my room.” Her voice trembled as she spoke. A weakness she couldn’t hide.
