"Ever?" Disbelief swarmed Kyle's eyes. I could have sworn I'd had this conversation with him countless times over the past years. Maybe I was wrong. Or maybe he just hadn't been listening.
Dee groaned. "I told you that, Kyle."
"I know, but I thought you were exaggerating." He snickered. "Everyone's been to a club at least once."
I feigned boredom. It wasn't a hard feat. "Not everyone,"
"Obviously." He swung open his door and Dee followed suit. I took a moment to collect myself before I let myself out of the car to join them.
Cool night air met my flushed face and I instantly felt refreshed. It tasted crisp and despite the area - it tasted clean.
I scanned Dee's outfit with a puckered brow of surprise before I frowned. She wore a tiny strapless silver dress that barely extended past her fingertips when her hands hung at her sides. It was short - like really short. Her longer than long legs appeared to stretch for miles, casting the illusion that the dress was shorter than it really was. "Really Kyle?"
"What?" He looked and sounded confused as he looked between me and Dee. Obviously he wasn't able to make the connection.
"You don't think I have enough clothes on? Have you seen your girlfriend?" Was he blind or just so confident in their relationship that he didn't care whose greedy eyes would be staring at his woman all night?
Dee swatted me. "Hey,"
"No disrespect," I held up my hands playfully. "But where's the other half of your dress?"
Dee crossed her arms over her chest. "I look hot."
"You do." I nodded. "I'd totally be into you if I was into girls."
Kyle laughed. "I'm sure you would, El. Are you stalling or just trying to piss Dee off?"
"I think she's stalling." Dee winked. "She's scared."
"Duh, I'm scared." I gestured to the building. "I'm about to trust you two crazies to walk me into a nameless building that looks like it belongs on the set of a horror movie. And I think I'm going for a job interview." I laughed nervously. "Like - what the hell am I thinking?"
Dee looped her arm through mine. "You're thinking you're desperate, Ella."
"Yeah," I nodded. "I'm most definitely desperate."
"I'll protect you." Dee promised as she steered me to the door. I didn't have the heart or confidence to tell her there was no way in hell she would be able to protect me - or even herself when she was dressed like she was. I couldn't imagine dancing in the dress she wore never mind running or fighting. And I wasn't even going to get started on her shoes. If this was how the girls dressed in the club then I was seriously over dressed…as in I had way too many clothes on.
Kyle banged on the door with his fist and it opened immediately. The smell of booze, perfume and sweat assaulted my senses and music pumped around me. The middle-aged man who'd opened the door nodded at Kyle and Dee before giving me an inquisitive look. My heartbeat accelerated and my palms grew moist.
"How's it going, Kyle?" He asked gruffly.
"Good." Kyle shook the man's hand as soon as he let the door fall closed behind us. I instantly felt trapped and slightly claustrophobic.
"Who's the new one?" The man inquired and his dark eyes scanned me slowly. I squirmed.
"Her name's Ella. She's here to meet one of the Demi-brothers for a position." Kyle replied smoothly. I wondered how he maintained his confident persona while standing under this large man's inquisition. I felt as though I'd stepped into a mob house slash Hollywood club. I really didn't know what to think.
"She's here about a position?" The man snickered and my confidence plummeted. "Are they expecting her?"
"Come on, Rex." Dee's voice was sugary sweet. "Don't give us a hard time. Of course they're expecting her."
Kyle shook his head. "Who's in tonight, Rex?"
"Tonight it's Dace." The man called Rex replied, finally cooperating.
A vein in Kyle's neck throbbed and Dee looked to the floor, her grip on my arm tightened. Who the hell was Dace and why did he warrant this reaction?
"Daman isn't in the house tonight?" Kyle's voice was hopeful and Rex's eyes glimmered as he shook his head.
"No." He crossed thick arms. "Tonight it's only Dace."
"Tell him I'll be at the bar." Kyle said tensely. His shoulders were rigid as he walked deeper into the club I had a pulsating urge to bolt from without looking back. Instead, I went against every cell in my body and followed Kyle.
I tugged on Dee's arm. "What's so bad about Dace?" Personally I thought Daman sounded more intimidating, but what did I know? I was only going on the way the names sounded.
