“You’re pretty,” she declared. “I like you.” She squirmed in Gavin’s arms and he put her down. She looked up at me and put her hands on her hips. “We’re having a picnic in the backyard and you have to push me on the swings.” With that statement, she turned and ran around the back of the house.
“I guess I’m pushing her on the swings,” I said.
Gavin chuckled and released my hand, sliding his arm around my waist. He pulled me against his side. He pressed his lips against my temple. “I love you.”
We’d said similar things before, but this was the first time those three words had been stated in such a simple, declarative fashion. I could barely speak around the lump in my throat. “I love you too.”
I tilted my head to look up at him and he bent his head, giving me a soft, sweet kiss. I slid my arm around his waist and felt something that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I felt like I was home. Not because of this house or this neighborhood, but because of the man next to me.
“Ready?” he asked.
