Broken Rider(20)

“Just have a loose bolt under here,” Jack announced. “I’ll have it fixed in a minute.” Erin wished she had broken the sink in half before heading to the firing range. She felt she would do anything to keep Jack Riggans in her presence for an extended period of time. “Take your time under there,” she called out but Jack paid her no heed and within a minute he was standing erect and turning the sink on.

“Looks good,” he announced and placed a wrench back in the toolbox. “Is there anything else you want me to look at?”

Was there ever. “I think that’s it,” Erin replied with a frown on her face. “Unless you can think of anything that needs a looking at?” She realized the innuendo undertones in her voice were obvious, but decided she didn’t care. Fuck it, she thought, I’m only human. A girl has needs too…

If Jack heard the lust in her voice, he ignored it. “I can’t think of anything,” he said and placed his tan hat back over his salt and pepper mane. Erin shook her head and watched as he walked back across the kitchen and put away the toolbox. Now was the time. Erin was days from her period and her hormones were ablaze. If she was ever going to be able to muster up the courage to make a pass at the stone willed cowboy, now was the time. Jack came from the cupboard and she was waiting for him.

“Jack, I really appreciate all the help you’ve provided me. Would you mind if I cooked you dinner to thank you?” Erin had never asked a man on a date before, it was always the other way around, and even thought she had posed the question so the potential rejection wouldn’t hurt her as much, she still worried he would say no.

“Sounds good,” he replied without a moments thought. “What time would you like me to return?” Erin checked her watch and saw that it was two-thirty in the afternoon. “How about five o’clock?” she asked. It would give her enough time to tidy the house up and prepare a proper meal.

“I’ll be here,” he said and with a nod headed for the door. If he suspected Erin had ulterior motives behind her dinner invitation, he didn’t show it. Erin wished, one way or another, that he would just let her know if he was attracted to her or not. Just how hard would she have to try to get an external reaction from the man on the subject? Perhaps if she whipped out her ample breasts and showed him how hard she made her nipples he would have a comment on the subject. Or perhaps he would just tip his hat and wish her a good day. Erin had no idea.

“See you then,” she called out and watched as he turned back and smiled. Then he walked out the door and left Erin alone standing next to her now leak-free sink.

Erin checked the oven to see if the chicken breast was done and decided it needed a few more minutes. Since Jack was nice enough to fix the sink for her she didn’t want to return the favor by giving the man salmonella poisoning. The mashed potatoes were done and the gravy was just waiting to be poured all atop both. If she weren’t so nervous about her “date” she probably would have been more excited about the food. As it stood, she couldn’t get Jack off her mind and had been thinking about him since he left the cabin.

She began to wonder if he’d always been such a stoic man or if he developed his neutral attitude as a defense mechanism to help with the coping of losing his wife. Erin had a lot questions for the man, but they weren’t the type you could just blurt out and ask. If only he talked more and gave her a glimpse into his mind. Perhaps his refusal to do so was another defense mechanism of his. Or perhaps he’s just a quite man by nature. So many damn mysteries. She heard the rumble oh his bike in the distance and within five minutes a knock at the cabin door. Erin turned her head and saw it was Jack, just as she expected. “Come on in Jack, make yourself at home.” She realized how ridiculous it was to invite the man into what was already his technical place of residence, but it was his fault for knocking.

“Smells good,” he said and opened the screen door. Erin thanked him and asked if he would like anything to drink.

“Water, please.”

“Are you sure? I have beer and some wine too.”

“Water is fine for now.” Jack took a good look at the progress Erin had made and nodded his head. “I see you’ve really put in some work cleaning the place up, it looks very nice.” Erin waved her hand like it was nothing and motioned for Jack to take a seat on the couch. She took his dusty jacket and hung it up for him.

“Thank you,” he said.

“You’re welcome, Jack. Dinner will be ready in a few minutes. I hope you like chicken.”
