“You need to mind your own business, Mr. Davis,” She said.
“Now you force me to do something I haven’t done in a long time,” she said as she reached in her purse and pulled out a small handgun.
“So let me guess,” Davis said as he attempted to look at her through his watery eyes, “You killed her out of jealousy, pure and simple. Not only did you not have the guts to help your niece and stop here from being violated night after night, but you hated her because she was the object of your husband’s lust and not you. “
“ENOUGH!” she shouted as she pointed the gun at him, preparing to fire.
He rolled over suddenly and grabbed the shovel. She misfired, giving him enough time to jump up and deal her a blow. Her second shot went up in the air as she fell backwards. Blood ran from the wound in her head.
About a half hour later the police arrived and David told them as much as he thought they would believe. He told them that he had found the gun and the body, and the part about Mary Walton driving up and attacking him. He gave no mention about the apparitions or the portals or the voices….. The sergeant decided there were too many unanswered questions and they took him to the police station for further questioning. After a long hard session, they finally let him go. His story seemed to match the evidence. Davis went back to the house to gather his things and see if he could say his final goodbyes to Virginia. There was still crime scene tape surrounding the spot in the garden where Mary Walton died.
David went in and looked around the house. It was as silent as it could be; it was as if the whole business really were some kind of a dream.
“Virginia?” he said as he sat down on the couch, “Can you hear me? I just wanted to say goodbye.”
He did this for several minutes; but he got no answer from Virginia. Finally, he nodded off where he sat. Again, he entered a dream-like state and was drawn to the basement where he would enter through the silvery curtain that tickles all of your nerves. Again, he saw Virginia in the wheelchair and a figure approaching form the right. Only, this time he could see the face of a younger Mary Walton, half cast in shadow holding her gun in front of her. His work to free Virginia from her plight was not finished…….
