Asmodeus(55)

By:Dawn McClure

No. That wasn't exactly the truth. She'd witnessed his pain when she had performed the locating spell. Plus he'd fought Nephilim when they undoubtedly reminded him of his own terrible past. He'd also shown concern over her when she had nearly died from the Nephilim bite.

Asmodeus pulled into a U-shaped driveway and she made the effort to quit thinking about him. He made it obvious there could be nothing between them, and in truth she had no idea why she even considered her feelings toward him. What was the point?

She shoved her thoughts aside and focused on her surroundings. Raum's beach house was a twostory dwelling with white paneling and blue shutters. Not exactly what she had envisioned him living in. It seemed too…quaint.

Asmodeus put the car in park and left it running. "I will not be long. Stay in the car."

"Why?"

He stared at her as though she wasn't very smart. "I don't want you to interfere, so I'm asking you to stay in the car."

"You didn't ask me to do anything. You told me to stay in the car."

He shrugged. "Same thing."

He opened his door and slid out. She forced herself to look out of the windshield and forget what a Neanderthal he was. What kind of relationship could she ever have with him? He needed to realize he couldn't order people around.

A relationship? Where were these thoughts coming from?

As she sat in the car waiting, three women in tight jeans, short skirts and enough makeup to put Tyra Banks and all of America's Next Top Models to shame walked by. They glanced at the car as they made their way to Raum's front door.

Who the hell were they?

They didn't bother knocking, they just opened the door and walked in.

Brianna sat in the car for a few moments. How long was Asmodeus going to be? What were they doing with Kelly?

More importantly, who were those sluts?

With a huff of impatience she opened her car door and climbed out. She straightened her dress as she walked up the stairs to Raum's front door. The wind had picked up, causing her hair to whip around her face. She ran a hand through her hair and raised her hand to knock, then dropped it when she heard a female voice croon, "Asmoday, you were supposed to come back last night. What was more important than us?"

She didn't hear him answer the slut, so she leaned her ear against the door.

"Why are you leaving so soon?" she heard through the door.

Leaving? Who was leaving?

The door began to open and her brain caught up with the words she heard. She straightened and glared at Asmodeus, who stood before her wearing a frown.

"I'm almost finished. Go back to the car." Though he seemed calm she noticed the illumination in his eyes and the way the muscles in his jaw worked.

"Who the hell is she?" One of the girls whispered loudly. Brianna looked in their direction and gave them a once-over.

Sluts.

She looked back at Asmodeus. "Where is Kelly? What's going on?"

Before Asmodeus could answer her, she caught sight of Raum. He walked out of a hall into the living room.

When he saw her standing at the door a look of confusion crossed his features. "Brianna? What are you doing outside? Come in." He motioned for her to enter his house.

Brianna smiled at Asmodeus and took Raum's offered hand. She noticed the sluts were steaming in their hip-huggers.

"A mortal, Raum? Why?" one of the hookers asked.

Mortal? What the hell were they? Other than sluts, of course. Asmodeus walked out of the room, toward the back of the house.

"She's not mine. She's Asmodeus's."

Brianna shook her head, ready to deny that bit of garbage, when the tallest of the women leaned close to her and sniffed. Like a dog. The woman was sniffing her like a dog. "Hmmm, O positive."

Unwilling to let that bit of rudeness go, Brianna leaned toward her, sniffed and crinkled her noise. "Hmmm, HIV positive."

"Okay," Raum said, pushing her toward the front door. "Waiting in the car might be the best idea."

"Of course. Kick me out, not the three hookers." She tried pulling away from him. "Where is Kelly?"

Raum said something to the sluts, but she didn't catch it. The three women seemed seriously pissed. The tallest one looked as though she'd do some severe damage, and Brianna did a double-take when the slut's eyes turned white. Pure white.

Raum opened the door. "I'll fill you in later. Kelly's not at her finest at the moment."

"Those girls are demons?" Didn't demons eyes turn red?

Raum looked puzzled, pausing with his hand on her arm. "No."

"That girl's eyes…they turned white."

Raum looked back at the women. The taller woman's eyes went back to normal. He sighed and tried nudging her in the direction of the door. "Here, why don't I walk you out to—"
