Again, she didn't speak. His eyes were illuminated, his body tense as he leaned over her. She figured the best course of action would be to keep her mouth shut.
He turned over and shut off the lamp. She lay there beside the ancient demon staring at a ceiling she couldn't see.
She'd hurt him. Saying she was sorry wouldn't take the pain away, for either of them. Soon, unbeknownst to him, she would know pain. The Abyss would take care of that innocence.
Her plan had been that of an amateur, juvenile and foolish. What could she do now? She couldn't just give up. Yet how could she kill Asmodeus when he had already been through so much? Especially now that he had protected her, even after she had lied to him over and over again. Why couldn't Michael just give him a break? The others who fell with him were free, why not him?
If only she could obtain an audience with Michael and pose the question to him. If she tried to summon him she'd have to do it far away from Asmodeus or she'd be screwed. Asmodeus would try to kill Michael and she would be in worse trouble than she already was. The question was, how could she get away from him now? She'd put herself right back where she started—a prisoner.
There were so many questions she wanted to ask him. When she had searched his name online she had come across something that called him a Watcher. He had been a Holy Watcher, then noticing what the humans had, fell from grace and became a Rebel Watcher. Had he really fallen out of lust and, as the article stated, "cohabited with the daughters of men" wherein the Nephilim had been born?
She grew tense as she lay next to him.
She'd have to sort everything out in the morning.
She just wished she could shake the feeling she had betrayed Asmodeus.
Chapter Ten
"What kind of kinky shit went down in here last night?"
Brianna squinted at the light her eyes met when she tried to open them. She attempted moving but came up short, unable to pull away from the bed. It was then she recalled the handcuffs. Her shoulders burned and her back was stiff and sore.
"Y'all don't waste any time, do you?"
Who the hell was talking? Brianna brought her head off the pillow, ignored the stab of pain that shot through her shoulder blades and looked in the direction the voice had come from. When she saw it was Raum she let her head fall back onto the pillow. He had on red boxer briefs and nothing else.
"Get out," Asmodeus growled from beside her, turning on his side and taking the blankets with him. Jackass. As long as he was warm and comfortable—not exactly what she had experienced last night.
"Well, hate to break up your den of sin, but her little friend Kelly is here demanding you take something off her. I was more than obliging, but she punched me in the stomach, the little witch."
"That's right. Now, out of my way. I need to talk to—" Kelly stopped short when she saw Brianna. Kelly's face was a mask of shock. Mortification crept up Brianna's spine when she realized what they must look like. "What in the hell is going on?"
Brianna closed her eyes, silently cursing Asmodeus. This was humiliating.
"He put one of those damned necklaces on you too. What's with the handcuffs, though?"
Brianna opened her eyes in time to witness Raum give Kelly a wink. "I'm betting they were playing a little game of cop and wench myself."
Kelly's eyes widened as she looked down at her. Brianna refused to say anything to either of them. She just wished they would go away. Quickly.
As the effects of sleep wore off, Brianna felt the weight and pull of the grounding necklace, making those awesome powers she had gained useless. Just one more obstacle to overcome if she stuck with her mission.
The blankets once again stirred and cold air hit her leg. Asmodeus sat up and began to stretch. Must be nice.
"Can you take these damn things off me?" Her voice was hoarse. She stomped down the traitorous thoughts about how gorgeous he looked when he first awoke. He looked down at her, sleep tugging the corner of his eyes, his features relaxed as she glared back at him.
He slid out of bed. "Sure thing."
The handcuffs disappeared. She tried bringing her arms down by her side but she couldn't. They were too stiff and heavy, and she couldn't feel her hands. She bit back a moan.
Kelly stomped over to her side, casting a glare at Asmodeus. "You're such a jerk!"
Kelly rubbed her arms, sending unwelcome feeling back into them.
Asmodeus looked unfazed by Kelly's outburst. "I'm not taking the grounding necklaces off either of you. Not until I figure out what the two of you are up to."
"I have a job to do," Kelly sputtered. "I can't even read people's palms with this contraption around my neck. It gives me headaches."
