Asmodeus(35)

By:Dawn McClure

She crawled out of her soiled jogging suit, took the arrowheads out of the pocket and placed the clothes in the laundry basket. As quietly as she could, she opened the medicine cabinet and set the arrowheads on the very top shelf, underneath a small package of tissues. She would need those later.

After pushing the teal shower curtain aside, she stepped into the warm shower.

Yes, she was on second base, and soon she would be rounding third. Easy enough.

She'd go out into that bedroom, show a little leg, flip her hair a bit, and thank him for being her hero for the day.

Why was she so nervous? All she had to do was seduce an ancient demon, gain his trust and kill him. Problem? Perhaps just a little.

She finished scrubbing off the stench, having to lather her hair twice, and shut off the shower. She leaned out of the tub and snatched the white towel off the towel rack.

First thing first. Pajama pants wouldn't help her cause. She was going commando under that robe.

She dried her hair with the towel and ran a brush through it, trying to give herself time to quit shaking. She needed to be fierce. It was him or the Abyss.

With a renewed sense of urgency, she slipped the robe on, brushed her teeth—bad breath was an instant turn-off—and pinched her cheeks.

There. She looked fresh—fresh for a ravaging.

She winked at her image in the mirror and left the bathroom. As she walked into the bedroom she saw Asmodeus reclined on the bed fully engrossed in a rerun of The Golden Girls.

She watched him as he watched the show. He seemed mesmerized by it.

What kind of demon watched The Golden Girls?

She winced when the little old lady made a smart-ass comment to Blanche and Asmodeus smiled. It was a tiny smile, but it made him seem less demonic somehow.

She walked farther into the room and he looked up. She'd left the top of the robe open a bit. Well, a lot. It was the first place his gaze wandered to.

He rolled off the other side of the bed, seeming to put as much distance between them as he could. "You should get some sleep. You've been through a lot and it's late."

"You're not sleeping in here?" Her gaze caressed the bed as she fiddled with the opening of her robe. Her heart threatened to beat right through her skin. She had to do this. It was her only option. Get it together.

He followed the direction of her hand, his eyes turning from light green to a green and yellow mix. She could sense his confusion. Maybe she allowed her nerves to push this part of the plan too fast. Fast wasn't good, but slow was worse given she had only a week to complete her mission.

He settled his wandering eyes, which were now changing to a yellow-black mix, to her face. "Actually, I'm heading out with Raum. Naberius will be here should you run into any problems, which I cannot foresee."

"Oh. I just thought we could watch some TV or, you know, whatever." Jeez, could she be any more obvious? She glanced down at her boobs. They looked perky enough.

"I'll see you in the morning." He turned, and without another word he left the room and shut the door behind him.

Oh, now that was something else. She'd have to step up her game. Stub her toe while she was in the shower and screech for help. Accidentally lose her towel while bending over.

Where was he going, anyway?

She sat on the bed and fell back against the pillows. The easiest way to kill Asmodeus would be to do it while in the throes of passion.

He would sleep with her, she'd make damned sure of it.

He probably didn't trust her, especially after Naberius and Raum's little speech. It surprised her the way he had defended her. In the car she had been reveling in the odd feel of her new powers, but now that she had a moment to herself, his actions seemed confusing. From what she had witnessed, he was the kind of man who missed nothing.

She shouldn't have pushed the seduction so fast. Damn. She wasn't thinking clearly. What with the new powers, the attack and the impending imprisonment, she was a serious basket-case.

As she reached for the remote she heard a knock on the door. She jumped up, threw her hair around for added volume, sat back down and relaxed against the pillows. If she wasn't so desperate her actions would seem comical, but her ass was on the line. She closed the robe a bit, not knowing who was at the door. "Come in."

Asmodeus walked in. "May I have your phone?"

She pointed at the dresser. Was he going to take it away again? "I put it on the dresser."

He picked it up and started pushing buttons.

"What are you doing?"

"Naberius showed me how to program numbers into these phones. I'm programming my number into yours. Valencia let me borrow her cell for the time being. I don't want you to think I've abandoned you." He finished up and handed it to her. "If you need me for anything do not hesitate to call. I can be here in seconds. I won't allow anything to happen to you."
