I pulled up to the front of my house. Knowing that it was now a home I shared with November only made coming home that much sweeter. I couldn’t believe how much had changed in the short amount of time since I had met her. I’d never known it was possible to have this with a woman. I’d never fully understood exactly what my dad and granddad had been talking about until the day I met November and she changed my life with one look.

The second I shut off my Jeep, Beast was at my door, his tail wagging back and forth with excitement. “What’s up boy? You been good?” I rubbed his head, pushing him out of the way so I could close the door. I walked up the front porch and opened the door. November was at her normal spot in the kitchen with her Kindle in front of her. A few weeks ago, I had gotten home to find her in bed reading.

I smiled at the memory. I had walked into the bedroom, seeing November lying on her back on the bed, her face in her Kindle.

“What are you reading?” I had asked, making her jump. She’d looked so beautiful that I’d climbed onto the bed, up her body, crowding her.

“What? Nothing.” Her face had turned red, making my eyebrows draw together. Really, what could have embarrassed her so much?

“Let me see.” I tried to pull the Kindle out of her hand, but she had it in a death grip. So I started tickling her until she released it. Once I got it away from her, I straddled her waist, pinning her in place. Then she covered her face with her hands, making me laugh. “It can’t be that bad, baby.” I started reading, my mind trying to decipher what the shit said. “What the hell is a pearl? And a honeypot?” I asked her.

“Asher, get off!” she cried out, not taking her hands away from her face, her body bucking against mine.

I dropped the Kindle to the bed, pulling her hands above her head. “No I'm going to spend some time licking your pearl. Then I'm going to fuck your honeypot,” I said with a straight face, watching her eyes widen.

I snapped out the memory when I realized that November hadn’t said anything and that I was almost in front of her. “Hey, baby.” I kissed her forehead and looked her over, noticing that she looked pale. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

She jumped off the barstool and ran to the bathroom.

I looked at where she’d just run to and got worried when I heard her getting sick. I grabbed a washcloth and ran it under the cool water before crouching down next to her, lifting her hair out of her face and off her neck, putting the washcloth there.

“Feel better?” I asked. She nodded but didn’t make eye contact with me, making me worry. “Come shower with me.” I didn’t give her a choice. I picked her up, and she wrapped her arms around my neck as I carried her into the bathroom.

I set her on the vanity and turned on the shower. I was going to get her undressed, but she jumped down and started brushing her teeth, so I proceeded to get undressed. I was down to my boxers when she looked at me in the mirror, her eyes filled with worry. I didn’t know what was going on with her, but I sure as fuck didn’t like the distance I felt between us all of a sudden.

“I’ll be right back,” she told me before quickly leaving the room.

I suddenly wanted to punch something. I tried to think of what could have happened between our morning goodbye and now, and nothing came to mind. I was standing in front of the mirror when she came back into the bathroom holding a box wrapped in yellow paper. She handed me the box before getting back up on the counter.

“What is this?” I looked at the box. It wasn’t my birthday or any other special occasion.

“Just open it.”

I looked at the box for a second before ripping off the paper and opening the lid. When I looked inside the box, I was confused by the contents. A small, pink kid’s gun and a box of condoms were inside. My mind worked franticly, trying to understand the hidden meaning. Then I got it.

She was pregnant. Not only that, but she was pregnant with my child. I felt my heart swell with love for her, and my eyes get wet. I lifted my eyes to meet hers and couldn’t believe that this beautiful woman was now carrying my child.

“Does this mean what I think it means?” I asked, hoping I was right. She nodded, pulling out a test from her back pocket and handing it to me, letting me read the word ‘pregnant’ on the screen. “Fuck,” I whispered, my heart overflowing with love for her.

A few weeks ago, I had walked into a local jewelry store, I hadn’t known what I was doing there until I had looked in the display of engagement rings and saw one that I knew would look perfect on her finger.

I heard her say something, but my mind was too busy to catch it. I dropped the test in the box before picking the box up off the counter. I carried it into the closet, putting it up on the shelf for safekeeping. Once I had it tucked away, I went to my dresser drawer, pulling the small ring out of the box and palming it.
