A Touch of Temptation(38)

By:Tara Pammi

His gaze traveled the length of her once again, intractable.

“What’s going on?”

He clicked his phone shut. “I have something urgent to take care of.”

Her stomach tightened. “So go. I’ll even bid you goodbye with a smile.”

“You’re coming with me. You can laze in a spa, swim in a beach, shop for maternity clothes...among other things.”

Her skin sizzled at the double intonation on the last bit.

“Everything you should be doing.”

Her breath hitched in her throat at the resolve in his gaze. “You like lording it over me, don’t you? I’m not going anywhere with you.”

He took a step toward her and backed her against the limo. He pulled her hand into his and twined their fingers. She felt his touch to the tip of her toes.

“I was worried about you. I am still. So shut up and accept it.”

Her heart thumped inside her ribcage. Gooey warmth flooded through her. No one had ever worried about her. Ever. It had been her job to worry for as long as she could remember.

She had worried about her mom first, shielded her from her father. And after she had walked out she had tried her best to protect Liv from her dad’s wrath. No one had ever seen past the veneer of her perfection to the emptiness beneath—even Liv, who cared about her....

With his thumb and forefinger he rubbed over her forehead. “Stop thinking so much. You will stay with me so that I can keep an eye on you.”

“Why?”

“You didn’t seem yourself last night. Or just now.”

“Last night I was hormonal. Tonight I’m horny.”

Liquid fire blazed in his gaze.

“Those are the only colors on my rainbow lately.”

He laughed, the sexy dimple in his cheek winking at her.

“Hormonal and horny women need looking after.”

It had been a very strange day on so many accounts.

Once the janitor had locked her out of her company’s premises she had returned to her apartment, fuming with disbelief. Because for the past six years she had worked every Saturday except the day she had gone to her wedding.

By the time she had finished every last scrap of the delicious sandwich Anna had given her, taking away her laptop in the process, and with her usual intelligence deserting her, Kim had realized too late that everything had been orchestrated by Diego.

Total lack of sleep last night meant she had zonked out for the rest of the day.

“I came to check on you twice and you were sleeping. Anyone with a little sense can see your body needs rest. Why do I have to force you to it?”

She flushed, unbidden warmth spurting in her. He had checked on her. Twice. She should resent his high-handed attitude; she should at least offer token resistance. But she couldn’t muster a protest past the warm fuzzies filling her up.

When had anyone ever checked on her? This was the same strangely weakening, cared-for sensation that had driven her to marry him six years ago. She had stupidly wanted that feeling to last forever.

“And what were you doing there, of all places?”

He sounded so aggravated that she smiled. “I was going crazy after sleeping straight through the day. So I made a list of all the things I need to get ready before the babies come. Then I—”

He tapped her temple with one long finger. “I’m going to cure you of your overthinking if it’s the last thing I do.”

“Then I got thinking of all the things I won’t get to do anymore when the babies arrive.”

“And going to a sex club was one of them?” His frown deepened into a full-fledged scowl. “What else was on it?”

The flare of interest in his gaze goaded her. Last night had been terrifying on so many levels. Right at that moment she would do anything to see what he felt for her reflected there. Even if it was just lust.

“Sex with a stranger was number two and sex in a public place number three. I thought I could shoot two birds with one—”

He tilted forward, all two hundred pounds of hulking, turned-on, prime male focused on her. A tingle started deep in her lower back and began inching its way all over. Her palms slapped onto his chest as he angled his lower body closer.

“You’re pushing me on purpose, pequena. Are you ready for the consequences?”

His rock-hard thigh lodged in between her thighs, sparking an ache in that exact spot. A whimper clawing out of her, she pushed at him. The feel of hard muscles and the thundering of his heart under her fingers was just as torturous.

The heat uncoiling in his gaze made mincemeat of her. “Okay, fine. I made that up,” she said, cupping his jaw. “I...I didn’t know what to do with myself. But if you’re going to rearrange my everyday life the least you can do is...”
