A Mate's Bite(27)
Karli. She hated the name, and Kass knew it. It’s why she continued to call her that after all those years. The single fist fight they’d ever had when they were children had been caused by the horrible nickname. Karla hated it. But there was no stopping Kass when she knew something bothered Karla. She had continued to use it and would because she knew it annoyed Karla.
Emma growled. “Did she say little?”
“Why are you here?” Karla went straight to the point.
“Karli. You always were the boring one of the trio. I was going to your house when I met these awesome guys on the road. They said this was the hottest club in town.” She glanced at Nate and licked her lips, grabbing hold of his T-shirt. “I gotta say, I’ve never seen this many sexy men in the same room. They have this whole primal sexiness going.”
Jordan growled. “They could tear you to pieces too.”
She tried to ignore the hazy red that covered her vision. No matter how much she counted to ten and back, or all the woo-sas in the world she mentally repeated Kass still had her hands on Nate. And he was trying very politely to tug her off.
“Let him go.”
“Come on, Sis, relax already.”
“Sis?” Nate’s face tightened. He was angry.
They hadn’t spoken about the fact she was a triplet or her annoying sister yet. In her defense, she was just now spending more time with him. How was she supposed to know Kass was going to show up at the Horny Wolfe out of all the places she could have gone to?
He gave her a look that spoke volumes. Her heart skipped a beat. She hated for him to think she was keeping things from him on purpose. It was hard to open up. Perspiration gathered in her palms. Rubbing her hands on the sides of her sweat pants, she tried to keep herself from slapping her sister’s hands away from her man.
“Kass, let go of him and let’s go.” Karla tried to hold on to her patience. Seeing her sister continue to try to grab Nate was really pissing her off.
“But I was just having some fun.” She tried to close the distance between her and Nate, but he managed to keep her at bay even though she was clutching his shirt.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” The growl left her throat before she could stop it. Not that she would. “You don’t know him? Do you even care if he’s in a relationship?”
The people surrounding them stopped to watch her, but she didn’t care.
“Geez, Karli. What bug crawled up your ass?”
“This is just like you, Kass,” she threw back. “You are so self-involved you don’t stop to consider anyone else but yourself. What the hell are you doing here anyway?”
“Oh, come on, Karli.” She grinned yanking on the material of Nate’s shirt. “You’re such a baby. Live a little.”
“I said let him go!” She growled, tired of Kass touching her wolf. “Let him go. Now!”
There. It finally happened. As much as she’d tried for it not to, she finally lost her temper. It wasn’t something that happened often, but when it did, watch it. A smile spread over Nate’s face.
She glared at him. “What are you smiling at?”
He moved to her side, curling an arm around her to lead her off the dance floor. “I think we should get out of here now. You and I have to talk.”
Kass giggled behind her. “Always selfish, Karli. We could have shared.”
Yeah, right. She’d rather tie Nate up and hide him from the world before she let Kass lay another hand on him. He was hers. Don’t ask where she got this whole need to claim him when he was the shifter, but Nate was the only man she’d ever felt strongly for. There was no way she’d let her player sister mess with what they had going.
She rode back to her house in Nate’s truck. Kass chose to ride with Jordan, Ellie, Nicole and Barbara, leaving them alone during the ride. She’d found it hard to say much since anger still fired her veins. Her temper simmered, ready to explode on her sister. Kass truly had no shame. It was a sad state to see Kass throw herself at Nate without a second’s hesitation.
“I’m going back to the bar, but first I need to know something.” He twined their fingers together. Brought them up to his lips and kissed the back of her hand. “Why didn’t you tell me you had a sister?”
She shrugged, worried her lip and watched the others enter the house, leaving them alone in quiet coolness of his truck. “I don’t like talking about my family much. As far as I’m concerned Kel is the only person who cares about me.”
His brows curved down in a concerned frown. She felt more comfortable talking to him when he didn’t laugh off her frustration with Kass. After being used to always holding things inside, it was great to speak to someone about her sister and not be told she was being mean as some friends had in her youth. Right at that moment something opened up and told her to trust him. She’d been lying to herself for a long time now. Knew she had deeper feelings for Nate than she’d been unwilling to admit even to herself. But it was seeing Kass near him, seeing her touching the only man Karla had ever truly wanted with more than just lust that sealed it.
